Earlier this year, "Incredible Hulk" director Louis Leterrier reiterated his desire to bring "The Avengers" to the big screen. And now a report indicates that Leterrier is indeed in the running to direct Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
"I am on the shortlist, but I'm at the bottom of the shortlist, I'm sure," Leterrier told Ain't It Cool News. "I don't know who the other guys are, but I have a great relationship with [Marvel], and I've been very vocal to them and everyone else that I am the one to direct it."
"I loved my time at Marvel," he said. "I loved those guys. They're fantastic. [Marvel Studios President] Kevin [Feige] is such a passionate boss; he gets his hands dirty. It's a universe I want to keep exploring. I was frustrated with ['Incredible Hulk']. It was like, 'That's it? Only one superhero? Can I do more???' We'll see. Time will tell."
The report also speculates that "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston ("The First Avenger: Captain America") may also be under consideration to direct "The Avengers." Back in October, "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau announced that he would not be helming "The Avengers", although he will be on board as an executive producer.
Last year, Leterrier spoke out about his desire to team up with Favreau, Branagh and Johnston on four different "Avengers" movies over the course of a single summer.
If Leterrier does return for an "Avengers" film, it would likely increase the possibility that Edward Norton would reprise his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the movie. Norton recently said that the director of "The Avengers" should receive a greater degree of creative control — similar to the control Christopher Nolan had while making "The Dark Knight." Norton also stated that he "loved" working with Leterrier.
Back in January, Leterrier offered his thoughts on what it would take to get Norton to return.
"If you find something interesting — yeah, I'm sure [Norton] would [be back]," said Leterrier. "He's a fanboy. He's as big a fanboy as you and me, maybe even more."
"The Avengers" is currently scheduled to be released on May 4, 2012.
