It's Not Official Until Patton Oswalt Says You're A Nerd
Posted 3/30/10 11:31 am EST by Rick Marshall in Commentary, Video
Among the high points of my time as editor of Splash Page, there are a few specific moments that stick out. My interview with former "Doctor Who" star David Tennant almost made me hyperventilate, and the time I spent talking about ninja movies with Chuck Norris is still a little too unbelievable for me to wrap my head around.
And then there was the time Patton Oswalt complained about me being too geeky...
"I did two interviews with really good, knowledgeable comic book nerd guys," Oswalt told MTV Movies Editor Joshua Horowitz when asked about his geek cred during a recent red carpet event. The writer/actor was referencing our conversation earlier this month about his new "Serenity" comic book published by Dark Horse Comics.
"After a while, I got kind of defensive," he said. "I was like, 'I don't know what you mean by that, Rick, okay? Fine, you win!'"
"I keep forgetting that a lot of people at MTV have the geek and nerd cred themselves," he laughed.
While their chat eventually took a bit of dark, comics-inspired turn (watch the video to see what I mean), I can't help but get a kick out of the final moments, when he offered up some on-camera thanks for the "Serenity" interview.
It's a pretty great moment, given that I've been a fan of his work for years. Heck, I still own a copy of "JLA: Welcome To The Working Week," his 2003 comic that remains one of my favorite stories written about DC's Justice League.
So Patton, if you read this, you're welcome for the interview... and thank you for this great moment of personal geekery.
What are some of your favorite geek-out moments? Let us know in the comment section or on Twitter!
