With today's big reveal of the "Iron Man 2" post-credits scene, fans received just a taste of some of the crossover magic they'll be treated to in director Jon Favreau's much-anticipated sequel to the 2008 blockbuster.
When MTV News snagged some time with Favreau, he explained some of the references to other Marvel properties made in "Iron Man 2," how the movie timelines connect, and the specific scenes eagle-eyed fans should watch out for in the film. [SPOILER WARNING!]
"If you look at the end of the 'Incredible Hulk,' you have Tony Stark saying, 'Hey, I'm trying to recruit you for the Avengers Initiative,' or whatever he says at the end of that one," said Favreau. "That clearly does not happen between 'Iron Man' and 'Iron Man 2.' That happens after 'Iron Man 2.'"
However, and this is where the SPOILER WARNING really comes into play, there are some direct references to external events in "Iron Man 2" that seem to indicate activities far more important to S.H.I.E.L.D. than Tony Stark and his armor. At one point, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) mentions some "problems in the Southwest region" that he's dealing with — which will likely perk up the ears of anyone familiar with Marvel's plans.
"If you look at the screens, especially when you're dealing with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, you can start to see areas identified there," said Favreau of a few moments in which S.H.I.E.L.D. computers monitoring current events appear in the background of a scene. "There are little clues that are layered into graphics that relate to other films, other franchises in this world. You might want to look at it a few times or wait for the DVD."
