Frank FrazettaAs I reported earlier today on Twitter, veteran artist Frank Frazetta has died at age 82.

The creator responsible for some of the most iconic images from the worlds of swords-and-sorcery and science-fiction, Frazetta died due to a stroke suffered earlier today.

Perhaps best known for his paintings of Conan the Barbarian that adorned the covers of Robert E. Howard's paperback adventures, the artist contributed both covers and interior art for comics and numerous novels — including the "Creepy" comics and Edgar Rice Burroughs' "John Carter of Mars" series. His images of musclebound men, terrifying creatures, and scantily clad women in need of rescue became the inspiration for countless artists and literary works. Read More...

Earlier this year, Peter Sarsgaard was cast as Hector Hammond in "Green Lantern," giving fans a clear idea of who the villain will be when actor Ryan Reynolds finally makes his big-screen debut as Hal Jordan.

Now we have our first look at Sarsgaard as the telepathic villain, courtesy of Sky Showbiz. It's not the most attractive photo, sure — but it looks as if the film will stay true to the source material and give Hammond the bulging brain of his comics counterpart.

First appearing in a 1961 issue of "Green Lantern," Hammond is described in casting reports as "the pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father's eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor." Read More...

iPad-TwitterBritish comics makers had to wait a few weeks longer than their American counterparts to order iPads from Apple, but Dave Gibbons and Paul Cornell were among the first to jump on the devices when they became available in the U.K. over the weekend. Both sides of the Atlantic, by contrast, got to see "Iron Man 2," and Jimmy Palmiotti and Jhonen Vasquez both encountered some surprises related to the film off-screen.

There were a few scattered disappointments floating around the comics Twitterverse this morning as well, though. Actress Lena Horne's death, the new Meat Loaf album and Dan Slott's discovery that he can no longer get on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disney World were among them. Check out these concerns and a photo of Stan Lee partying it up with some Image Comics founders below.

It's all in the Twitter Report for May 10, 2010. Read More...

Smallville Season FinaleThe season finale of "Smallville" airs this Friday, and The CW has begun airing a teaser for the episode that offers a glimpse at what's in store for Clark Kent, Lois Lane and the multitude of other DC characters introduced in the popular series recently.

Along with the expected/announced appearances by Green Arrow and Black Canary, the teaser also features a quick glimpse of Hawkman — confirming earlier reports of a return by the Justice Society (or at least one member). The promo also features a chilling declaration from Zod, who's played by Callum Blue in the series.

"My people, they're overtaking this planet, and you can't stop me," he announces. Read More...

Iron Man villainsActions have consequences and few people know this as well as Tony Stark, the Marvel hero known as Iron Man. Over the years, both he and his company have sometimes had a hand in creating powerful enemies.

One of the themes that's certainly relevant in "Iron Man 2," which debuted this weekend, is that some villains owe their careers to ol’ Shellhead and his armor. Here are some of the major baddies whose villainous paths originate with Iron Man — making them prime source material for this weekend's film and future chapters of the Marvel movie universe.

Oh, and before anyone complains, Obadiah Stane (a.k.a. Iron Monger) isn't on the list because he was an active villain long before he donned his own suit of armor. Read More...

First ClassLast week, word emerged that Matthew Vaughn had officially signed on to direct "X-Men: First Class," which is being put under an accelerated development in order to meet a 2011 release date. The deal happened so quickly, that Vaughn hasn't even had a chance to meet with the "X-Men: First Class" screenwriters, according to Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller.

"Honestly, we haven't spoken to [Vaughn] yet," said Miller during an interview with I09. "It's a very accelerated process."

"They've eliminated the usual screwing around and waiting two to four weeks when you turn in a draft," added Stentz. "It's amazing how much fat there is in the feature development process. And how quickly you can make it happen if you cut it out. TV proves that." Read More...

I know some of you are likely to cry "Spoiler!" here, but stick with me, folks — this post is fairly spoiler-free for anyone who's seen the first "Iron Man" and has been following along with our "Iron Man 2" coverage thus far.

After making a nice little cameo in 2008's "Iron Man," Captain America's shield returns for yet another appearance in Tony Stark's workshop during a key scene in "Iron Man 2." While we're going to leave out the details surrounding its cameo, we did make sure to get some thoughts from director Jon Favreau about the iconic shield's place in the "Iron Man" universe — and why it popped up in Tony's workshop to begin with.

"We introduced Captain America's shield briefly in one shot in the last film," Favreau told MTV News. "An ILM artist put it in there as a joke to us for our cinesync sessions, when we're approving visual effects." Read More...

The secret ending of "Iron Man 2" has leaked online, as has the not-real-at-all ending. While the hush-hush scene comes after the credits of Tony Stark's latest cinematic outing, the movie features another alternate ending before those credits roll — well, an alternate ending of sorts, that is.

In an interview with MTV News, "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau revealed that certain events were tweaked for the film's ending, though these changes didn't require altering actual story elements. Instead, Favreau and his post-production crew simply ratcheted up the action factor for the film's final battle sequence.

"We did add some action to the end of the film," said Favreau of the changes made to the film. "The nature of what happens in the final battle [was altered]." Read More...

Yesterday, Sam Rockwell explained how comics influenced his "Iron Man 2" character, but how about his co-star, Don Cheadle?

MTv News asked Cheadle about the source material that informed his portrayal of James "Rhodey" Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, in the blockbuster sequel, and the actor offered up some thoughts about what he took from the stack of comics Marvel sent his way.

"[I took] something from all of them, because the character over the whole arc changes quite a bit," said Cheadle when asked which War Machine stories, if any, specifically informed his performance. "They both do."

"Ultimately in the comic book lore, War Machine takes over for Iron Man for a while, so I don't know," he added. "It all just kind of went into the soup and then you still have to show up on set and bring something."
