Earlier this year, "The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan confirmed that he would have direct involvement with the next "Superman" film, while later stressing that he does not intend to direct it.
Although there has been relatively little news since then, a surprising candidate for the director's chair has emerged.
Chris Columbus is rumored to have been offered the chance to direct the new "Superman" film, according to Superman Homepage. The rumor claims that Columbus — who directed the first two "Harry Potter" movies and the recent "Percy Jackson & The Olympians" adaptation — is believed to be "the right fit" for the film among those inside Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures.
The screenplay for the new "Superman" will be written by Nolan's "Dark Knight" and "Batman Begins" collaborator, David Goyer. Back in March, Nolan credited Goyer with the initial idea for bringing the Man of Steel back to the big screen.
“[Goyer] basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman,’” said Nolan. “I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.”
Both Goyer and Christopher Nolan's brother (and fellow screenwriter) Jonathan Nolan have both been previously rumored to be under consideration to direct the new "Superman."
More recently, Christopher Nolan told MTV News that his current focus is on fine tuning the right story for "Superman" rather than finding the right actor.
"It's all about figuring out exactly the tone and meaning of the story and how you're going to approach it," said Nolan. "Casting comes later, and all of those considerations come later."
