The new image from "Thor" released today has a lot of people talking around Splash Page HQ — and we wish we could tell you everyone was saying good things. The new picture featuring Anthony Hopkins as Odin in the foreground, with Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki standing behind him, has been the recipient of mixed emotions around the comics world.
With that in mind, here's the good and bad of the image as far as we see it:
HAMMER TIME: The image gives us our first look at Hemsworth actually holding Mjolnir, Thor's magical hammer — last seen in the "secret" ending to "Iron Man 2." The size and style of the hammer seem to suit the character, so that's one debut fans can feel good about.
LACKLUSTER LOKI? While we're excited to see Hiddleston's performance as Loki, the actor's debut as the character leaves a lot to be desired. Sure, Loki's a bit too far off to make out to many details, but we have to admit we're left wondering where all the evil, scheming, malevolence is? Is it just us, or does Loki seem sort of zen in this photo. You know what would've solved this problem? A helmet with big, long, curly horns. Now that is pure evil.
THE ARMOR MAKES THE... GOD? Some have been critical of the redesigned godly armor for director Kenneth Branagh's film, but we actually dig the more modernized take on the "Thor" characters. Clearly drawing from Olivier Coipel's "Thor" designs, the armor certainly avoids the campy feel many feared from any live-action take on the character.
ODIN BY WAY OF STEVE CARELL: Was anyone else a little surprised to see the king of the Norse gods looking a little too, well... happy? Keep in mind, this is a warrior god — a powerful being with a foul temper who once slew the fire demon Surtur. He has a keen military mind and is known for his willingness to meet brute force with equal (and usually greater) bloody force. And in this photo, he's positively beaming!
In fact, Hopkins' Odin-smile reminded us an awful lot of another movie's well-known promotional image. Check it out for yourself:

Maybe we're looking at a kinder, gentler old god? *shudder*
By Odin's pearly white smile, here's hoping the next thing we see from "Thor" is more Jack Kirby brawl and less Judd Apatow goofiness!
