The cast of "X-Men: First Class" has just evolved by one — a very significant one at that.
According to Deadline Hollywood, "The Twilight Saga" star Edi Gathegi is the latest actor to come aboard for director Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men" film, joining the cast as the young mutant known as Darwin. Featuring the mutant ability to reactively evolve, Darwin is able to grow gills to breathe with while underwater, create fire-resistant skin while exposed to flames, see with perfect clarity through pitch dark surroundings and much more.
He first appeared in "X-Men: Deadly Genesis," a comic book arc that revealed the identity of the third Summers brother to be Vulcan. Darwin was a former friend of Vulcan's, teamed up with the mutant as part of a rescue operation to save Cyclops and his peers from certain doom on Krakoa the Living Island. The mission was an utter failure and led to the team's apparent demise, though both Vulcan and Darwin managed to survive the incident.
Gathegi is best known for playing Laurent in the "Twilight" films, a vicious vampire who runs with similarly ruthless bloodsuckers like James and Victoria. He also delivered a memorable turn in director Ben Affleck's "Gone Baby Gone" as a powerful gangster named Cheese.
In signing on for "First Class," Gagethi joins a growing cast list that includes James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Lucas Till as Havok and Kevin Bacon as the movie's unidentified villain.
