Warren EllisDuring this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, I had the chance to sit down with "Red" creators Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner to discuss the upcoming film based on their comic book series, as well as various other projects each creator has in the works. Among those projects is "Gravel," the upcoming film based on Ellis' comic with artist Mike Wolfer, published by Avatar Press.

Announced back in October, the "Gravel" movie will get a first draft of its screenplay by Ellis himself, who will also serve as executive producer on the film for "Superman Returns" studio Legendary Pictures. The celebrated writer offered MTV News a brief update on the status of the film, as well as that of "Global Frequency," a television series based on one of his popular comics.

"I'm halfway through ['Gravel'] right now," Ellis told MTV News of the film's script. "I'm actually writing a new William Gravel story. It's a horror-action thing in the whole combat-magician mode of those books." Read More...

January JonesThe Twitter Report joins writer Brian Reed today in wishing Brian Michael Bendis a happy birthday. I'm not condoning the act of seeding his Wikipedia page with sketchy details about his past, but in honor of his special day it does look like Dr. Laura Schlessinger has decided to quit radio and January Jones has been cast as Emma Frost.

Elsewhere, Jim Lee posted some Batman and Joker sketches. I've linked to one of those below. There, you can also check out a tweet from one creator who will be missing the Wizard show in Chicago this year after more than a decade of attending and a mysterious pitch request that B. Clay Moore received from Marvel.

I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for August 18, 2010. Read More...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: RileyJoss Whedon pulled a giant plot twist in his recent “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” arc, “Retreat,” regarding Buffy’s former flame Riley Finn. Fans could have been satisfied with the explanation given in those issues, but instead we get to see much more — with Riley’s version of events.

In stores today (August 18) from Dark Horse Comics is “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Riley,” a brand new story from television writer/producer Jane Espenson and artist Karl Moline. Espenson gets the chance to tell what really led to former Initiative member Riley Finn becoming a double agent for Buffy.

The one-shot is the second we’ve seen during “Season 8” (the first being Willow’s spotlight), and is actually titled “Commitment Through Distance, Virtue Through Sin.” It's intense, but have we come to expect anything less from Buffy’s love life? Read More...

Captain AmericaWhen it comes to "Captain America: The First Avenger," there's still quite a bit we haven't seen of Marvel's star-spangled superhero. A while back, some "Captain America" concept art hit the 'Net, and Comic-Con attendees got a brief peek at Chris Evans as Captain America during the Marvel Studios SDCC panel, but that's about where it ends.

That's why a trio of photos reported to be from the "Captain America" set in England have piqued our interest so much.

Posted by The Media Club, the photos feature a USO-style stage decorated in red, white, and blue, a large tank covered by a tarp, and what appears to be a medical tent — all set up in the middle of a forest. Read More...

Back in 2008, Marvel Studios hired Joe Johnston to direct "The First Avenger: Captain America," much to the initial surprise of fans. While Johnston's adaptation of "The Rocketeer" was remembered fondly, he was primarily known for directing lighter fare like "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" and "Jumanji."

However, Johnston's extensive movie resume, including a memorable stint at Lucasfilm during the first "Star Wars" trilogy and the first two "Indiana Jones" films, went a long way towards getting Johnston to "Captain America" gig, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

"I actually think Joe's entire career has been leading up to this," Feige told MTV News during this year's Comic-Con. " If you look at the work he... of course the design work on the original 'Star Wars.' I saw a whole bunch of people dressed up as Boba Fett starting already to line up for his signing later this afternoon." Read More...

January JonesAfter a number of "X-Men: First Class" casting announcements over the last few days, Fox has added additional actors, including a surprising new Emma Frost.

January Jones has been signed to play Emma Frost, according to Deadline. Back in June, Alice Eve was reportedly in negotiations for the part, which ultimately did not go through. Tahnya Tozzi briefly portrayed the young Emma Frost in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Jones is perhaps best known for her role as Betty Francis — the former wife of Don Draper — on the AMC series "Mad Men." Jones has also appeared in "American Wedding," "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights," "We Are Marshall" and "Love Actually." Read More...

Iron PatriotAs you might have noticed when Hasbro's 19" Galactus arrived at Splash Page HQ, we have much love for the toymaker's Marvel-themed offerings. Heck, anyone who creates an action figure of that size based on our favorite planet-chomping Lee/Kirby creation is okay in our book.

That's why I felt the need to share this new batch of images for Hasbro's 2010 line of Marvel toys. Hardcore toy collectors probably own a few of these Marvel Universe and Marvel Super Hero Squad toys already (since many of them are out on shelves now), but just in case you're like me and can ogle toys online for hours, this gallery's for you.

I've posted two of my favorites below, but you can click on any of the images to see the full gallery (18 images). Read More...

CLiNTIt seems comic book writer Mark Millar has the golden touch these days. We’ve seen his popularity grow outside the comic world with successful feature film adaptations of “Kick-Ass” and “Wanted” and he doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

On September 2, with the help of British talents Jonathan Ross and Frankie Boyle, Millar and Titan Magazines will debut “CLiNT,” a new monthly magazine featuring features and interviews on movies, video games and television as well as four serialized comic-strips.

“I want this to be edgy and irreverent, the kind of thing guys will be passing around lunch-halls and common rooms,” said Millar. Exactly what kind of content could get guys and gals to do such a thing? How about the much-anticipated launch to the “Kick-Ass 2" comic? Read More...

Large head and all, Peter Sarsgaard seemed plenty excited to be playing Hector Hammond when he joined in the fun on the "Green Lantern" Comic-Con panel last month. Even better, that excitement seems to have spread to his wife and fellow comic book movie alum, Maggie Gyllenhaal.

When I caught up with the "Dark Knight" and "Crazy Heart" actress while doing press for her new film, "Nanny McPhee Returns," I asked her whether her positive experience working on a genre film influenced her husband's decision to sign onto one of his own.

"I don’t know what exactly influenced him, but we were there on that set some and that movie looks like it’s going to be really good." she said. "He looks great in it." Read More...

America OlivoDuring the San Diego Comic-Con International, it was confirmed that Darkseid and the evil New Gods of Apokolips will be heavily featured during the tenth and final season of "Smallville." And while there is currently no announcement as to who will portray Darkseid on the series, two of his primary followers have already been cast.

Steve Byers (pictured) will play Desaad and Michael Daingerfield will step into the role of Gordon Godfrey in the third episode of the season, according to Kryptonsite. The episode is entitled "Supergirl" and also features the previously announced return of Laura Vandervoort as Kara.

Desaad is one of Darkseid's main henchmen in the original "New Gods" stories by Jack Kirby. In the miniseries "Legends," Glorious Godfrey — another agent of Darkseid — took on the name Gordon Godfrey as he led a campaign of fear and hate against all superheroes. Read More...
