Anthony Bourdain is an acclaimed chef, food author, world traveler and television personality best known for "No Reservations," his globe-trotting Travel Channel series that shines the spotlight on the world's greatest culinary treats. Now, he can add another job to his ever expanding resume: comic book author.
Robot 6 discovered a pair of interviews in which Bourdain revealed that he's in the midst of working on a graphic novel for DC Comics tentatively titled "Get Gyro," a story that takes his obvious passion for food and sets it within a high octane comic book world.
"It's about ultraviolent food nerds," Bourdain told the Omaha World-Herald about his graphic novel. "It's a gourmet slaughterfest, sort of like 'Fistful of Dollars' meets 'Eat Drink Man Woman.'"
As for a time table, Bourdain informed NOW Magazine that "Get Gyro" is "in the pipeline for next year."
"I describe it as 'Yojimbo' meets 'Big Night' and 'Babette's Feast,' an ultra-violent slaughter-fest over culinary arcana," he said.
Bourdain's sojourn into the comics field isn't entirely out of left field. The rock star food personality made his love for the medium and its many pioneers quite clear earlier this year when he eulogized Harvey Pekar on his Travel Channel blog.
"'Our man' as Harvey often referred to himself in his work, was a good man," he wrote of Pekar in July. "An important man. A 'great American' is an expression that has been cheapened with over-use, but if these words ever meant anything, they surely describe Harvey Pekar."
