Joss Whedon AvengersTo say that Joss Whedon is working on the most high-profile project of his career would be a loaded proclamation, even if that project is "The Avengers". From “Buffy” onward, Whedon’s creations have procured the kind of loyal fanhood studios dream of.

However, since the ravenous base of Whedonites pledge their allegiance to the director’s distinctive sense of humor and character work, there's some concern that with such a high-profile film aimed at mainstream audiences, fans may see the Whedon they love watered down, if only ever so slightly.

“There are definitely stipulations and restrictions,” said Whedon of potential creative concessions in the upcoming "Worlds of Whedon" special issue of SPX magazine. "But [Marvel Studios President of Production] Kevin Feige is very active as a producer and worked with me a lot on the story, but they are absolutely honouring the fact that this is my film." Darren AronofskyThe search is on to fill out the director's chair for Christopher Nolan's forthcoming "Superman" reboot, and while five possible filmmakers have already been mentioned for the job, there's yet another man entering the rumor mill: Darren Aronofsky.

The "Black Swan" director is the latest name being bandied about to helm "The Man of Steel" for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros., according to the Los Angeles Times. The report states that Aronofsky has had discussions with Nolan about the job, and is being targeted for the director's chair because he would bring an "auteur sensibility to the comic book mythology."

This isn't the first comic book property that Aronofsky has been rumored for, as the filmmaker is reportedly one of 20th Century Fox's first choices to direct the sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Read More...

SmallvilleLast week, I asked you to tell me which of the upcoming comics-related television series you were looking forward to most this Fall. With "The Walking Dead" kicking off and "Smallville" drawing to a close, there are some pretty huge moments in television history (for comics fans, at least) happening over the next few months.

But those aren't the only programs with ties to the comics world this season, so I asked you to rank your favorites from the upcoming slate of Fall programming. And while the results matched up pretty well with what I expected regarding the aforementioned "big two" shows, the rest of the vote was a little surprising — and I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't inform our coverage down the road.

So, thanks again for voting in last week's poll, and be sure to keep it locked to Splash Page for more coverage of these (and other) big shows. I've posted the full breakdown of votes below, so make sure to let me know what you think of the final tally! Read More...

Like most long-established comic book characters, Green Lantern Hal Jordan has had his origin story re-imagined by countless writers over the years, each putting their own mark on how the cocky test pilot became the ring-wielding hero of Space Sector 2814. Sure, the fundamental elements remained the same in each incarnation of Hal's origin (he's given the ring by a dying alien, trained by Sinestro, etc), but it's the ways in which the stories are tweaked that often makes or breaks an origin story.

In 2008, DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns retold Hal's beginnings as a Green Lantern in "Secret Origin," a seven-issue arc that established the character's continuity in the modern age. Two years later, the actor bringing Hal to life on the big screen told MTV News that it was that particular comic that informed his take on the character and his superhero origin.

"Geoff Johns is it," said Ryan Reynolds when asked if any particular arcs or creators inspired the film. "His 'Secret Origins' book is what I use as the bible for this." Read More...

The Walking DeadIf you're Monday morning got off to a rough start, you weren't along, and tweets from Mark Millar and Warren Ellis today will show you the type of company you were in. Sunday night, by contrast, seemed to be filled with a lot more cheer, particularly for "Eastbound and Down" fans and a certain IDW CCO who received some words from Harlan Ellison.

Elsewhere, John Rogers believes that the new digital strategy for "The Walking Dead" is being under-appreciated, while John Layman didn't seem to appreciate "Marvel Super Hero Squad" for the Wii at all. Find out if you came to the same conclusions they did after the jump.

"The Walking Dead" premieres on AMC next month (October 31), and though we haven't seen the official opening sequence for the series just yet, a new, fan-made intro to the series is making the rounds — and it's pretty spectacular.

Created by animation artist Daniel M. Kanemoto out of images from Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore's celebrated comic book series, the fan-made intro unfolds over The Eels' haunting (and appropriately mood-setting) tune "Fresh Blood." Check it out:

"I wondered what the opening titles to this terrifying new television show might look like... so I animated a spec title sequence using artwork ripped from the pages of the comic, originally illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore," wrote Kanemoto on the video's Vimeo homepage. Read More...

James McAvoy has already revealed that he won't attempt to imitate Patrick Stewart when he steps into the role of Professor Charles Xavier for "X-Men: First Class." Indeed, he wants to bury Stewart's performance entirely. But McAvoy's approach begs an important question: how will his Xavier interact with Michael Fassbender's Magneto?

"I think there's a lot of room there for a real connection," McAvoy told us of his hopes for the relationship between the two "First Class" protagonists. "By the end of that relationship, there's still a kind of affection for each other. You see that in the stuff that Patrick and [Sir Ian McKellen] did together. There's a lot of love there, strangely, I think." Read More...

The FlashIf "The Dark Knight" shattered preconceived notions that comic book movies are inherently lighthearted, then "The Flash" could help push those expectations even further.

"I think it's tonally somewhere in between ['Green Lantern'] and 'Dark Knight,'" screenwriter Greg Berlanti told Superhero Hype of "The Flash," the DC Entertainment superhero film he's writing alongside his "Green Lantern" collaborators Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.

"You're dealing with somebody who is already a crimefighter in a world of those kinds of criminals and that kind of murder and homicide," Berlanti continued. "I find you talk a lot about different films when you're working on a film, and we spend a lot more time talking about 'Se7en' or 'The Silence of the Lambs' as we construct that part of Barry's world, then I thought when we got into it. It helps balance a guy in a red suit who runs really fast." Read More...

Although Donald Glover didn't win his bid to play Peter Parker in director Marc Webb's upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot, the comedian got his chance to swing his way into the superhero's suit nonetheless thanks to his role on "Community."

The second season of the NBC comedy series premiered last week, and fans that supported Glover's campaign to star in "Spider-Man" were met with a nice consolation prize as the comedian's character, football fanatic Troy Barnes, appeared in the episode wearing Spider-Man pajamas. Check it out below:

"It's definitely a cutesy inside wink at the Donald Glover for Spider-Man campaign," said "Community" creator Dan Harmon in an interview with New York Magazine. Read More...

Mark RuffaloMark Ruffalo isn't the first actor hired to play Bruce Banner, but he's joining an elite few who have actually transformed themselves into the scrawny scientist's mean, green alter ego.

New York Magazine reports that Ruffalo won't just play Banner in "The Avengers," but he'll also provide the motion-capture for the Hulk.

"I'm really excited. No one's ever played the Hulk exactly, they've always done CGI," said the actor. "They're going to do the 'Avatar' stop-action, stop-motion capture. So I'll actually play the Hulk. That'll be fun." Read More...
