The official announcement of Jeremy Renner's involvement with "The Avengers" came just two short months ago, but whispers of his involvement predate the announcement by almost a full year. In fact, Renner's relationship with the major Marvel franchise goes back even further — at least, his relationship with director Joss Whedon does.
"I've known Joss actually for a long while from doing a little arc on 'Angel,' which was fun," Renner told MTV News, referring to Penn, a centuries old vampire who eventually adopted the serial killer moniker "The Pope."
Based on his past experience working with Whedon, Renner feels confident that the director has a solid grasp on "The Avengers" and the greater Marvel Universe. Read more...

With Marvel Animation a significant part of the publisher’s rocket-fueled expansion over the entertainment landscape, there's been occasional speculation that Pixar or Disney might have a role in making Marvel movies, but nothing official... yet.
However, according to comic artist and writer Brendan McCarthy ("Spider-Man: Fever", "House of Mystery"), the animation powerhouses may be open to the idea of working with Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme: Doctor Strange.
In an interview with comics blog Bad Librarianship, McCarthy recalls a discussion he had about adapting Doctor Strange while in a meeting with Disney. Read more...

Last week, we gave you the first look at "Metalocalypse/Dethklok" #1, the first issue of Dark Horse Comics' upcoming series based on the hit Adult Swim animated series. Judging by reader response, you were pretty excited about seeing Nathan Explosion, William Murderface, and the rest of their Dethklok band mates get their own comic, so we're back with another exclusive peek at the project, courtesy of Dark Horse.
This time around, we have the first look at two covers from "Metalocalypse/Dethklok" #3, featuring art by Jon Schnepp and "The Goon" creator Eric Powell. We also have a full synopsis for the third issue of the series, co-written by Schnepp, "Metalocalypse" creator Brendon Small, and Jeremy Barlow.
Go ahead and ride the DethTrain! Read more...

"Halo: Reach" brought home the kind of money that comic book publishers have to be envious of right now. Brian Lynch just felt bad for Pac-Man, but Erik Larsen said that he just doesn't like very many Marvel and DC comic books these days.
In other news, new Marvel exclusive Kieron Gillen is stoked about his new X-Men gig, but he's also beaming about second agreement. You can find out what that is, who responded in kind with raunchy Thor humor and who can't believe that respected film critics have accepted Joaquin Phoenix's new film "I'm Still Here" as a real-life documentary.

Earlier this summer, producers Ted Koplar and Richard Suckle spoke with MTV News to dispel the rumors that the developing "Voltron" feature film adaptation was dead in the water. But if you didn't believe their comments, perhaps you'll believe some visual evidence.
Two alleged pieces of concept art from the live-action "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" adaptation have premiered online at JoBlo. If official, the two images showcase the size, scale, scope and setting from the forthcoming "Voltron" film, depicting a practically apocalyptic New York City torn to shreds at the hands of some truly menacing creatures.
We've posted the images after the jump, but head over to JoBlo.com for high-res versions of each shot. Read more...

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but something tells me I'll need a few more words than that to fully explain what you're going to see here.
For now, the short version: I recently traveled to London to check out the set of "Captain America," director Joe Johnston's currently shooting adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics series. Sadly, I can't talk about the specifics of my visit just yet, so you won't hear a peep from me about Cap's costume or Red Skull's makeup effects. (Spoiler Alert: They're both frakkin' awesome.)
But I will say that I had a blast on set and was very impressed with what I saw. You'll know more in the coming months, but for now, all I can do is leave you with this picture of me grinning like an idiot, holding Cap's shield. Read more...

When "Green Lantern" hits theaters next summer, don't hold your breath waiting for a damsel in distress to appear on the big screen. According to actress Blake Lively, her character of Carol Ferris is much more of a proactive heroine than the common superhero female lead.
"Playing women with strengths are the characters I'm most attracted to," Lively told MTV News while promoting her work in "The Town," director Ben Affleck's latest Boston-set crime thriller. "Being in a superhero movie opposite such amazing actors and an incredible director, and not just being a damsel in distress but a fighter pilot and [Hal's] boss at the company." Read more...

"Spider-Man" is swinging back into theaters in 2012, and just in case you've been off the grid for the last year, there will be a new face under the mask this time around. Pegged to the role back in July, actor Andrew Garfield will portray a teenage Peter Parker in director Marc Webb's upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot.
When Garfield dropped by MTV HQ to discuss his new film "Never Let Me Go" (a powerful adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's award-winning novel), I made sure to pick his brain a bit about everyone's favorite wall-crawler. He couldn't say much about the role at this point, but he did share some thoughts about where he's at with "Spider-Man" these days and what the character means to him.
"Nah, that's just another role, man," laughed Garfield when I asked if he was ready for all of the attention he's likely to receive as the new face of the Marvel hero. Read more...

Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell surprised some people when she won her primary race in Delaware; Ron Marz was among them. Ed Brubaker also wrestled with the week's news when he learned about plans for M. Night Shyamalan's "Night Chronicles" films.
Meanwhile, Rob Liefeld has welcomed Jesse Eisenberg as a casting choice in the new Facebook movie "The Social Network," and Brandon Jerwa wishes that someone at DC would welcome him on as a writer for a Firestorm book. Those tweets and Mark Millar's current hopes for a "Superior" film await you after the jump.

We're still a few years away from the premiere of "The Avengers," Marvel's blockbuster superhero team-up movie, but that just means we have more time to whet our appetites for the culmination of Marvel's grand movie plans.
As announced during this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Nick Fury, and Hulk won't be the only characters to get the spotlight in the film. Among the new additions to the cast is "The Hurt Locker" star Jeremy Renner, who'll play the team's hotshot marksman, Hawkeye. MTV News caught up with Renner during the press junket for his new film "The Town," and asked him whether we'll see him don Hawkeye's classic purple costume for the film, or whether we'll get a more "Ultimates"-style take on the character.
"I think it's going to be a little more reality-based," said Renner. "You can kind of tell with Scarlett [Johansson]'s character [in 'Iron Man 2'], it's going to be more of a uniform . . . and not a big purple, comics sort of thing." Read more...
