There's a new rumor floating around that actress Zooey Deschanel is talking with director Marc Webb about joining the cast of "Spider-Man" as Elizabeth "Betty" Brant. A member of the Daily Bugle staff working under totalitarian editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson, Brant is typically considered a supporting character at best in the "Spider-Man" mythos, though Webb allegedly has big plans for her.
"He wants a strong performer to carry the role and Zooey fits the bill perfectly," an alleged insider tells Showbiz Spy. "The role is hers if she wants it.”
Deschanel has worked with Webb in the past, starring in "(500) Days of Summer" as the titular Summer, a free-spirited young woman who embarks on a turbulent romance with a co-worker played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Gordon-Levitt was once considered a favorite amongst fans for the role of Peter Parker, though the part eventually went to Andrew Garfield.
It's far from confirmed that Brant will have a role in the next "Spider-Man" movie, and even less certain that the role would go to Deschanel. But the character has had a role in previous Spidey flicks, albeit a small one, played by actress Elizabeth Banks.
For now, count Deschanel amongst the rumored "Spider-Man" contenders including the likes of John Slattery and Sam Elliott for JJJ. Keep it locked into Splash Page as more news develops.
