Doctor: A Christmas CarolOkay, so you're probably going to hate me for this: I've seen the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special.

"Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol" officially premieres Saturday night, December 25 — but thanks to the good people at BBC America, your friendly neighborhood Splash Page editor was able to get an early look at the next big "Doctor Who" event. And let me put it this way, fellow Whovians: you will not be disappointed with Matt Smith's latest adventure as The Eleventh Doctor.

The last thing I want to do is ruin any of the fun you'll have when the episode airs this weekend, but given how much I enjoyed it, I felt obligated to offer up a spoiler-free assessment of why "Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol" is one of my all-time favorite adventures with The Doctor — and why I suspect you'll feel the same way about it. The AvengersAnyone who caught the post-credits "Iron Man 2" ending knew that there were big things in store for the state of New Mexico in the Marvel movie universe, but now the studio's ambitious plans will play a big role in the real-life "Land of Enchantment" long after "Thor" finishes filming there.

In an official press release issued this week, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson announced plans to host production of Joss Whedon's "Avengers," with shooting scheduled to begin in April 2011.

"In addition to being our biggest production to date, 'The Avengers' will be the most technologically advanced and will provide cutting-edge training opportunities for our crew,” stated Richardson. “I’m announcing this as a Christmas present of sorts to the people of New Mexico. This is a perfect example of the incredible job creation, economic impact and global visibility this industry has brought our state over the past eight years, and of the need to keep it moving forward." Doctor Who crossoversI don't care how good this year's Doctor Who Christmas episode is, I'd trade it in a heartbeat for the Batman and Planetary crossovers that Paul Cornell and Neil Gaiman were discussing last night over Twitter. Tony Lee also contributed some thoughts, and if you approve, I would definitely encourage you to start writing DC and the BBC.

In other topics, Dan Slott found himself affected by the recent Skype outage and shared his despair with the world, and the Spider-Man musical continues to be an electro-snark-magnetic across the Twittersphere. Check out how Chris Eliopoulos feels about it and see Michael Papajohn's reaction to a new candidate audition for his old part in Marc Webb's Spidey movie reboot.

Raider - BatmobileWhen creating the Batmobile of “Batman Begins” (and the rest of the Christopher Nolan Batman movie universe), it’s clear that designers aimed for plausibility—a vehicle that wouldn’t just cause a viewer’s inner fanboy to run around screaming, but one that fit amongst the high tech military toys of Wayne Industries.

Resembling more a streamlined tank than a Lamborghini, the latest Batmobile always looked like it could roll right out of a secret army operation. More so than any conveyance Batman has manned over the years, Nolan’s Batmobile is an actual means of defense rather than a flashy piece of vigilante flair.

That’s why it’s not surprising that, as reported on The Engineer (via Bleeding Cool), the Future Projects Vehicles department of BAE Systems (a company that, like the fictional Wayne enterprises, develops defense technology) based its latest tank design on Batman’s fan-titillating whip. Green LanternThe perpetual space of "Green Lantern" comics contains a galaxy of aliens that are visually arresting to say the least. But even the most bizarre extraterrestrial is fairly simple to pull off on paper, given a skilled hand.

Creatures in the “Green Lantern” movie clearly pose more of a challenge. In fact, fans might argue that the treatment of these unique aliens—mostly non-human members of the Green Lantern Corps—is what can ultimately make or break the "Green Lantern" film in the eyes of its audience. That fact probably weighed heavily on the minds of producers when they chose seasoned concept artist Neville Page to design the characters as they would translate to the big screen.

Speaking to CraveOnline, Page described his approach to creating a universe of aliens that span from humanoid to questionably vertebrate, addressing the possible inspirational role of incredible alien art book “Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials.” Read More...

Almighty Thor"Thor" bursts into theaters in May of next year, but if you weren't exactly impressed by the recently released trailer for Kenneth Branagh's comic book adaptation, don't worry — there's another "Thor" film on the way.

But it's not Marvel's Thor that we're talking about. Instead, brace yourself for "The Almighty Thor," a mockbuster of epic proportions. It's the latest effort from The Asylum, a film studio that specializes in producing low-budget direct-to-video productions that are timed to coincide with major studio productions — in this case, "Thor."

Bleeding Cool and Dread Central have rundowns on "The Almighty Thor," as well as various photographs from the set. We've posted a few of our favorites below. Read More...

Spider-Man musicalI've abbreviated the conversation heavily, but I just wanted to make you aware today of a masterfully executed debate that took place in the wee hours of the morning between Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis. Although you'll need to go to their Twitter accounts to grasp the full weight of their disagreement, below you can witness Millar's assessment of Steven Spielberg's carrer turned into an argument about Munich, which then devolved into a series of insults and ultimately culminated in the assertion that Brian K. Vaughan is now living in a home for old people. It was Twitter discourse at its finest.

In more serious matters Scott Allie spoke for the the soldiers of Sparta in response to Don't Ask Don't Tell getting repealed this week, while "Black Swan" and "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" continued to be hot topics of conversation. Find out who you agree with and whether you side with Millar or Bendis after the jump.

Spider-ManGood news for comic book fans living in Los Angeles and New York City: your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is swinging into your neck of the woods for his next big screen adventure!

The Los Angeles Times reports that director Marc Webb's "Spider-Man" reboot will divide its time between shooting in Hollywood and New York over a 90-day film shoot that began two weeks ago. The Sony Pictures lot in Los Angeles is the production's primary shooting location, with on-location work occurring at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood and Immanuel Presbyterian Church in mid-Wilshire.

Although the story of "Spider-Man" is traditionally set in New York City, the spandex-wearing webhead will only swing into Manhattan for two weeks worth of filming. The rest is planned to take place in Los Angeles. Read More...
