Iron Man 2When last year's Oscar nominations were announced, we lamented the fact that "Coraline" was the closest we got to a nod for a film based on a comic book property. This year, we have one very clear comic book movie in the mix, "Iron Man 2," but it remains the sole representative of the comics world.

The 2011 Oscar Nominations were announced today, and "Iron Man 2" received a nomination in the "Visual Effects" category. The only comic book movie named in this year's nominations will face stiff competition in the category from "Alice in Wonderland," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1," "Hereafter," and "Inception."

Sure, 2010 wasn't exactly the strongest year for comic book movies, but was "Iron Man 2" the only project worth a nod? I'd argue that there's another movie that could have made the list, too. Read More...

X-Men: First ClassX-Men fans may already know that if things had gone differently, they would have seen a Matthew Vaughn directed version of the franchise’s unofficial finale, “X-Men: The Last Stand.” As it was, the director bowed out of the project, Brett Ratner was put in his place, and Vaughn moved on to captain film adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s “Stardust” and Mark Millar’s “Kick-Ass”.

In an interview with EW blog Inside Movies, Vaughn explains what kept him from taking on the X-Men then, what he’s put them through now that he’s at the helm of "X-Men: First Class", and why the “Twilight” girls will like it.

As Splash Page Editor Rick Marshall demonstrated earlier this month, the Spider-Man suit that Andrew Garfield will don in Sony’s upcoming reboot of the comic franchise differs in key ways from the suits Tobey Maguire wore over the course of three movies as the web-slinging boy wonder. And those changes — a less emphasized Spidey symbol, for instance, and a thinner strip of red down the chest — left some fans disheartened.

But guess who wasn’t let down by the new suit? Maguire himself. The 35-year-old actor let MTV News know his thoughts on the costume when we caught up with him at the Sundance Film Festival, where he was promoting his dark comedy, “The Details.”

“The suit? I thought it looked cool,” he said. “I think they did a great job with the design of it and I’m excited to see it in action.” Read More...

Wonder Woman Comic CoverHe may have superhuman creative credits and clout within the TV industry, but even screenwriter and producer David E. Kelley was cautious in his optimism that a “Wonder Woman” reboot series he had engineered would land a spot on the production schedule of a major network.

But it’s official, perhaps sooner than most thought it would be. As broken by Deadline, NBC has picked up “Wonder Woman” to tout as part of its next pilot season.

This comes only days after the finalization of some network executive shuffling, with Jeff Zucker having evacuated his position as NBC/Comcast CEO, and former Showtime head Bob Greenblatt being newly instated as the network’s President of Programming. Read More...

Marvel's "Thor" and "Captain America" movies hit theaters this year, but even with both films on the horizon, it's hard not to look forward to "The Avengers," next year's massive team-up film that will put all of their big-screen heroes on one screen.

That's why we made sure to ask Thor himself, actor Chris Hemsworth, for an update about the team-up extravaganza when we caught him during this year's Sundance Film Festival.

"We've yet to sit down as a group and go okay cool what are we going to do here," Hemsworth told MTV News when asked if he'd met with the rest of his "Avenger" co-stars since making their debut at last year's Comic-Con in San Diego. Read More...

Spirited AwayKevin Smith didn't need to buy his film "Red State" at Sundance over the weekend to grab headlines. He already had a group of protestors from the Westboro Baptist Church helping him out on that front, and a few tweeters in the feed had some suggestions for the folks holding the picket signs.

Sadly, the death of fitness diehard Jack LaLanne also trended last night. You can check out who remembered him and which artist called him a personal fitness guru down below. It's all there after the jump along with football reactions and an Avengers-related issue that Christos Gage needs some help with.

Xerxes - Dark Horse PresentsDark Horse Comics has made a name for itself with great creator-owned projects like "Sin City" and the "Hellboy" comics, but way back in 1986 the publisher kicked things off with "Dark Horse Presents," an anthology series that went on to become the publisher's longest running title and many readers' first introduction to some of the industry's most celebrated creators.

In April, the publisher will relaunch "Dark Horse Presents" for a new generation of readers, kicking things off yet again with a mix of new and established creators — and one particular project that comic book movie fans will want to take note of. Veteran writer/artist Frank Miller will offer a sneak peek at "Xerxes," the sequel to "300," in the first issue of "Dark Horse Presents."

"Frank [Miller] was a big part of the original 'Dark Horse Presents,'" Dark Horse president Mike Richardson told MTV News. "'Sin City' started out as a series of eight-page features in the original 'Dark Horse Presents.' Sometime later, we did the '300' graphic novel as a comic series, so Frank is a big part of Dark Horse Comics' history." Read More...

In the time leading up to the premiere of "Iron Man 2," it was hard to decide which debut was bigger news: Don Cheadle becoming War Machine or Robert Downey Jr. unveiling the Briefcase Armor. While there's a good chance we'll see more of Tony Stark's portable armor in future installments of the franchise, the second film had barely hit theaters before talk of a solo "War Machine" movie began circulating around the 'net.

Last we heard from Cheadle, he dismissed the idea of a solo movie featuring Iron Man's gunmetal-gray counterpart. However, when speaking to MTV News during this year's Sundance Film Festival, he indicated that a "War Machine" solo movie was not only in the works, but the studio may already have a writer.

"They're developing it now, they're working on that," Cheadle told MTV News when asked about a "War Machine" movie. "I think they've hired a writer, so we'll see how it goes. It would be a lot of fun." Read More...

All this week we've seen photos and footage from the Los Angeles set of Sony's upcoming reboot of the "Spider-Man" movie franchise. And while it's always fun to analyze blurry, occasionally confusing shots of the film and its web-slinging hero in action, it's even better when we get a nice, clean shot of the ol' wall-crawler to scrutinize.

For example, this new photo from the set of the film:

Spider-Man

Yes, that's a brand new photo of Spider-Man in action while filming a scene in Marc Webb's upcoming reboot — and there are at least two very interesting elements of the image that caught my eye right away. Read More...
