The debut trailer for "Captain America: The First Avenger" premiered tonight during Super Bowl XLV. The :32 second first look at Joe Johnston's July 22 release might have been short, but it managed to pack in quite a bit of fan-pleasing glimpses of what's to come.
The trailer opens with a quick rundown of Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) transformation from puny military reject into beefcake super-soldier. We get looks at Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones), who enlists Rogers into the top-secret program, and Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), who developed the super-soldier serum. There's also a lighter moment between Evans and Hayley Atwell, playing Cap love interest Peggy Carter, as Rogers emerges from the machine that changes him into his super-powered self.
The money moment comes at the tail end of a series of action shots, which highlight Cap in his uniform. After watching Evans take on a range of running, shooting and flamethrowing enemies, the trailer cuts to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment during which Hugo Weaving peels away what appears to be a mask, revealing the scarred face of Red Skull.
The TV spot concludes with another quick Evans/Atwell moment. Evans cowers behind an unpainted prototype of his shield while Atwell fires a couple of bullets into it, to test its resilience. There's a little banter, followed by the logo and release date.
