Dwayne McDuffieSome sad news coming out of the industry wire today, as comic book, television, and movie writer Dwayne McDuffie has reportedly died due to complications of a surgical procedure.

An accomplished comics scribe whose work often challenged racial stereotypes in the industry, McDuffie's death was first reported at Comic Book Resources this afternoon and was later confirmed by various sources in and around the industry.

Among comics fans, McDuffie is probably best known as one of the co-founders of Milestone Media, a comics line that featured people of color as some of its most popular new heroes. One of the line's featured characters, Static, made the leap to television in 2000 as the hero of the award-winning animated series "Static Shock." Read More...

HeroDespite the death of "Chronicles Of Narnia" producer Perry Moore last week, plans for a television adaptation of his novel "Hero" are still in the works, according to Starz.

Originally announced back in November 2008, the adaptation of Moore's novel about a gay teenager struggling with both the onset of his superpowers and the secret of his sexuality was optioned by cable network Showtime and Stan Lee's POW Entertainment for development as television series. In the initial report of his death on WTKR, the project was mentioned as one of several he was working on at the time of his death — though cable network Starz appeared to be the new home for the project.

"It's still in development," a spokesperson for Starz told MTV News of the project's status in the wake of Moore's death. Read More...

Tom Hardy wasn't exactly surprise casting for "The Dark Knight Rises," what with him having worked with director Christopher Nolan on last summer's "Inception." The revelation of which character he'd be playing, however, was a surprise: Bane.

Until now, we haven't heard much about Hardy's (or Nolan's) plans for the brutish, brilliant villain, but the actor recently opened up about the role and what you can expect from him.

Hardy appeared on the British talk show "Alan Carr: Chatty Man" recently, and as expected, the subject of "The Dark Knight Rises" came up in conversation. Carr showed Hardy a picture of the hilariously campy Bane character from Joel Schumacher's 1997 film "Batman & Robin." Glancing at it and smiling, he joked, "It doesn't look very menacing, does it?" Kevin CostnerAs he tends to do, Warren Ellis offered up his thoughts on Muammar Gaddafi this morning, and he summed up the Libyan leader's response to protests there better than anyone else in the Twitter Report feed.

Although there was some lighter buzz today about the Kevin Costner "Superman" reports, the Knicks' Carmelo Anthony trade and the Facebook Breakup Notifier app, Libya and the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, definitely dominated discussion. Thoughts on all of these topics and the lasting legacy of "Spider-Man 3" await you after the jump.

There's been a ramp-up of news on the "Preacher" adaptation front in recent days, with rumors pointing to "I Am Number Four" director DJ Caruso taking the reins. Now the news is official, confirmed by the filmmaker himself.

Caruso took to Twitter last night with a short and sweet update: "My deal just closed on Preacher. Going back to the dark side and pretty f---ing pumped!"

It doesn't get much more concrete than that. Read More...

Green Lantern Movie FistAny Splash Page fans across the pond will be enjoying their Comic Con courtesy of “Green Lantern” this year. Organizers behind the MCM Expo—London’s huge 10-year running comic and entertainment convention—have announced the event’s sponsorship by DC’s slated summer blockbuster.

So the con’s swag bags will probably be adorned with images of Ryan Reynolds in green skivvies, but more significantly, the news indicates that MCM Expo (scheduled for May 27-29) is destined to be the forum for any last-minute releases and scoops related to the June 17 film. "Green Lantern" hits theaters June 17, 2011. Read More...

Kevin CostnerHenry Cavill was cast as Superman in Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot of the superhero film franchise, but there is still an entire movie full of roles yet to be filled. As rumors continue to pop up naming a variety of candidates for the female lead — who won't be Lois Lane — there's one star reportedly being sought who definitely won't be playing that role, but could factor into the cast: Kevin Costner.

There's a "heightened interest" in nabbing Coster for a "key role" in the upcoming reboot, according to a new report on Deadline.

There isn't any word on which character he's being sought to play, but even without any mention of it being a "key role," Costner's illustrious resume is proof enough that it won't be "Rescued Victim #3" or some other bit part. Read More...

AkiraThe man most responsible for bringing Harry Potter to the big-screen (he wrote seven of the eight films, missing only “Order of the Phoenix”), writer Steve Kloves has been tapped to polish the script for the upcoming, live-action version of the sprawling manga-turned-anime epic "Akira."

The Oscar nominated writer will take over work on the script from Albert Torres (“Henrey Poole is Here”) and previous writers, “Iron Man” scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, according to Variety.

Based on the report's choice of words, and the fact that Katsuhiro Otomo’s original graphic novel is known for its dense and sprawling storyline, it’s likely that Kloves isn’t doing a page-one rewrite, but tightening the script either for narrative or budgetary purposes. Read More...

ChristinaHendricksAlthough her husband is a big fan, “Mad Men” actress Christina Hendricks was mostly a stranger to the world of comic books when she was approached to play one of the most iconic characters of all time for Warner Bros. I’m talking, of course, about Superman’s main squeeze, Lois Lane, who Hendricks voices in the latest animated feature from DC, “All-Star Superman."

However, the actress does have a connection to the Marvel Universe right now due to her friendship and past working relationship (on “Firefly”) with “The Avengers” director Joss Whedon.

At the recent world premiere of “All-Star Superman” in New York City’s Paley Center, I asked if she'd spoke to Whedon about a role in that film. Read More...
