With the opening of “Captain America: The First Avenger” a few months away and our Summer Movie Preview Week in full swing, MTV News sat down with star Chris Evans to get the scoop on why he was initially skeptical about playing soldier-turned-superhero Steve Rogers and what eventually convinced him to take the role.
“A lot of people are always like, ‘Well, what do you like about comic book movies?’" said Evans. "To me, it’s just a story about a guy. That’s what I like about him. He starts out at such a relatable place . . . He has every shortcoming in the world and every reason to be jaded at the world. He’s just not. He’s choosing to be a good guy.”
“It’s his moral code," he continued. "It’s unshakeable. It’s that little guy’s story. It just so happens to be wrapped up in a comic book where he puts on a superhero outfit. To me it’s just another story about a guy that I liked.”
Still, he confessed to some uncertainty about donning the character's iconic costume.
“Sometimes you put [the outfit] on and you’re like, ‘What am I doing? What is this? How can this be taken seriously?’” the actor admitted. "We’re trying to create a reality to believe in. But I’m running around in a red, white and blue outfit? This is so silly.”
“But there are so many people who are invested in figuring that out and making that work — incredibly talented people," he said. "When I was in London, before we started shooting, we had fittings every few days. You know, 30 people in the room . . . One guy was in charge of the boots, one guy was in charge of the helmet, one guy was in charge of the gloves . . . There were so many people involved in making it look right.”
