“Captain America: The First Avenger” will be hitting theaters later this month, and two new featurettes have been released to the public, telling us more about the character Steve Rogers and what it took to make a period piece.
Posted at Epix, the first video is all about Cap himself. “Steve Rogers is a guy living during World War II and he wants to join the army but he can’t because he has a whole laundry list of shortcomings,” explains Chris Evans, the actor who brings the Marvel hero alive on the big screen.
“So he’s continuously been denied this one thing that he really wants,” Evans goes on. “So when he’s given this opportunity, he’s given the serum, you know, it doesn’t go to his head. He’s chosen because he won’t take advantage of it.”
In the next featurette, timing was discussed. Co-Producer Stephen Broussard talks about setting the movie in the time period that the character was created.
“We soon found it was essential to the story,” he says. “Once you took Cap out of that time period, it was more difficult to understand. We made the decision to tell the story the way it was originally told in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon.”
That meant having to recreate every aspect of 1940s Europe and America, from cars to clothes. But the fantasy element, created by Marvel, could still be there.
