OS X LionThe wildest week on the comic book industry calendar is officially underway in San Diego right now. Opening night tweets percolated out of Comic-Con International last night, featuring fear, costumes and even some humility (for charity) from Brian Michael Bendis.

Apple's new operating system upgrade was also a popular source of stress and delight yesterday. Creators collectively assessed which scanners and apps on their desktops managed to be compatible with OS X Lion, and Mitch Breitweiser predicted the future of Apple computing. His thoughts, Dan Slott on "Captain America: The First Avenger" and Matt Fraction's space shuttle contemplation ranked atop our list of favorite tweets list after the jump.

"The Walking Dead" doesn't shamble onto television sets until October, but the flesh-hungry horde of undead walkers are feasting upon Comic-Con attendees as we speak. Not literally, of course, though the post-apocalyptic zombie horror series does have a huge presence at this year's show. But if you're not in San Diego right now and your mouth is watering for brains, we're happy to bring the "Walking Dead" Comic-Con goodness to you.

AMC has supplied us with this exclusive image from the second season of "The Walking Dead," showcasing Rick Grimes and his fellow zombie apocalypse survivors trekking through the blistering forested heat of Atlanta. He's not alone, thankfully: Daryl Dixon is leading the pack with his trusty crossbow in hand, while friendly faces Andrea, Carol, Glenn and Rick's wife Lori hang in the background.

We all know that you can't make a superhero movie these days without a few fancy special effects, given all the flying, web-slinging, good vs. evil fighting that goes on. Not so for "Captain America: The First Avenger," however, in that the standard VFX challenges on this film were the opposite of what we're used to: they had to make something big look a lot smaller.

I'm speaking of course to the slight, slim size and shape of Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) body pre-super serum, which Evans recently revealed is almost all him.

"I'd say it's about 80 percent me," Evans said when asked how much of his body we see before Rogers becomes Cap. "We started out working on a bunch of different technologies. Something they threw out initially was, they said, 'We're going to put your head on a smaller actor's body.' I was kind of against that. I didn't feel like sharing the performance."

"The Avengers" aren't formally assembling for Comic-Con this year (not in Hall H, at least; there are rumors of a considerably more viral approach for promoting Joss Whedon's superhero movie), but that doesn't mean they're not celebrating the nerdiest weekend of the year.

With the San Diego-based convention kicking off in full swing today, Marvel Studios have used the occasion to launch the official website and first teaser poster for "The Avengers," the long-awaited comic book flick that unites the likes of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America and Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. head honcho Nick Fury.

FablesFROM NEXTMOVIE: Around the country, people of every race, religion and walk of life are pulling out their Stormtrooper costumes, dusting off their "I Grok Spock" T-shirts and lovingly preparing their CGC-slabbed, 9.2-graded, personally autographed copy of "Brother Power the Greek" #3. It can only mean one thing: Comic-Con is about to return to San Diego.

Over the years, Comic-Con has provided movie fans with some of the most buzzed-about moments in pop culture history. In order to get y'all properly stoked for this year's edition of the world's preeminent fan festival, here's a look back at nine of the most buzzworthy moments in Con history.

'300'
Of all the success stories to come out of Comic-Con, perhaps none is as surprising and impressive as Zack Snyder's "300." Heading into the 2006 Comic-Con, only the most hardcore Frank Miller fans were paying much attention to the adaptation of his acclaimed mini-series about the Battle of Thermopylae. That group, however, happens to include everybody who attends Comic-Con, which helps explain why the "300" presentation became the stuff of Comic-Con legend, with buzz that propelled the film to a shocking $456 million gross worldwide.

FablesIf we were David Yates, and had just helmed “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” which just enjoyed the highest-grossing opening weekend in history, we’d probably kick back and make ourselves a well-deserved Dagwood. But presumably, that’s why we’re writing news blurbs and Yates is eying a number of new projects for Warner Bros., including an adaptation of the comic series “Fables.”

With the “Potter” money tree no longer bearing fruit (is that a good metaphor?), Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” trilogy and Peter Jackson’s Tolkein adaptations both drawing to a close and Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” far from a sure thing, the studio is searching for another hit franchise for Yates. Recently, the good folks of New York Magazine’s Vulture blog laid out some of the possibilities.

DarknessSan Diego Comic-Con is upon us, and it already boasts big news: Mandeville Films is developing the Top Cow comic book series “The Darkness” into a feature film.

The Los Angeles Times acknowledges that, yes, there have been previous attempts to make a movie out of “The Darkness” before, but this time, Jackie Estacado's big-screen prospects look a bit more promising.

Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman are set to produce, while David Manpearl and Top Cow's own Matt Hawkins and Marc Silvestri (who co-created the character) will executive produce.
