There are so many major superheroic players involved in Joss Whedon's "Avengers" that it's easy to forget about the equally important supporting characters in the film. Like S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (played by "How I Met Your Mother" actress Cobie Smulders) for example.

Thanks to a lengthy chat with Smulders at D23, we are very intrigued about Hill's story arc in the film, but also psyched that Smulders snagged the role. She's just so fun and down to earth, and didn't geek out too much when we asked her about the most surreal moment on set thus far.

"I showed up to the set, like a week before we started shooting, just to meet with Joss and do rehearsals and stuff and I walked on the set and it was freakin' huge," Smulders recalled of stepping onto the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier for the first time. "It was the size of a soundstage, then you walked up these steps and you were just surrounded by this amazing gorgeous set, which my character is in charge of running. I was like, 'Holy smokes, this is crazy and this is big.'"

"The Avengers" assembled at Walt Disney's D23 Expo this past weekend, bringing fans a nice big spoonful of awesome action from Earth's Mightiest Heroes. But it's just a taste of things to come, of course, as guys like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth continue to evade our most pressing "Avengers" questions.

But even if the erstwhile Tony Stark and Thor son of Odin aren't up to divulge too many details about Joss Whedon's superhero epic, we here at Splash Page HQ can't help ourselves from asking a few questions of our own based on what was shown at D23...

Conan the BarbarianIf you're a comic book reader on Twitter, two of the greatest joys you can find in your feed are Yildiray Cinar art posts and Gail Simone-created hash tags. This morning, the Great Tweet Magnet was benevolent, because Cinar tweets a Weapon X piece and Simone sounded off with her love for Bruce Wayne's butler using the #anysexyalfred tag.

In theaters, "Conan the Barbarian" has been struggling with its box office numbers. Rob Liefeld is a documented Conan fan, so his opinion means something on this matter. Meanwhile, Rafael Kayanan proposed his own approach to Conan filmmaking. Check out their thoughts and a reaction to Grant Morrison's recent Rolling Stone interview after the jump.

FROM MTV MOVIES: The only problem with Christopher Nolan's hugely anticipated "The Dark Knight Rises" is that no one involved in the project can talk about it, and with such secrecy comes obsessive fanboy quests for spoilers and on-set footage and photos.

When MTV News caught up with "Rises" star Tom Hardy as he promoted another of his anticipated films, "Warrior," we asked what he thinks about the incessant quests for details about his character Bane and the rest of the film.

"I think it just shows that people are really into it. It's great," Hardy said. "If you love something, why not follow it?"

He added that he doesn't much care for those who seek out spoilers, however, and also hasn't paid much attention to the photos that have been released, official or not.

The biennial D23 Expo took place this past weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center, where fans and reporters were treated to an early look at all things Disney. But of everything the company currently has in the pipeline, the project that had everyone the most excited was “The Avengers.”

While the new footage debuted at the show hasn’t made it to the Internet (not yet, at least), MTV News did manage to catch up with many of the 2012 film’s stars, including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). While the castmembers were reluctant to give anything away about the heavily anticipated superhero team-up flick’s plot, they were willing to talk about how surreal it was when the Avengers finally assembled.

“That was pretty crazy,” Hemsworth admitted. “It was not only meeting Robert Downey and Scarlett and whoever, but it was meeting Iron Man and Black Widow and Hulk…. [I]t’s exciting.”

Johansson agreed with Hemsworth, mentioning that one of her favorite moments was when the cast was all brought together. Perhaps surprisingly, her co-star, Renner, explained that there were only two days when the entire team was on set at the same time.

You first got to meet Tom Hiddleston as Loki in “Thor,” but the trickster god of the Norsemen will be back for “The Avengers.” Hiddleston spoke to MTV News this weekend at D23 to give a little mythology lesson, but also to hint at what we can expect from the superhero movie.

“He’s the god of mischief and the god of menace,” Hiddleston said. “He’s still complicated. He’s still motivated by this tragic jealousy of Thor and the fact he doesn’t have a place in the universe.”

It seems jealousy has quite a bit to do with Loki’s character, and it's making him evolve. “[T]hat jealousy has made him more self-possessed,” the actor went on. “He knows who he is. He knows what his powers are. So he’s definitively more menacing.”

'Conan the Barbarian'FROM MTV MOVIES: Librarians, booksellers and English teachers, rejoice: Moviegoers overwhelmingly chose "The Help," adapted from the best-selling novel, over all of the remakes, sequels and reboots in theaters this past weekend.

"The Help" dropped just 21 percent in its second weekend of release, taking in $20.5 million (for a 12-day $71.8 million total) to become the #1 movie in America, according to studio estimates. The heavily promoted "Fright Night" remake, the "Conan" reboot and the latest "Spy Kids" all flopped.

Last week's #1 movie, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," was in second place this week with $16.3 million. The well-reviewed sci-fi film's $133.8 million total put it past where Tim Burton's critically maligned "Planet of the Apes" remake was during a similar spot in its 2001 theatrical run.

TintinConfusion and distress were popular sentiments in the feed last night. News out of Libya about Muammar Gaddafi's collapsing government had everyone's attention, but the comics industry received it's own shocker with word that the Arizona-based retail chain Atomic Comics was closing.

Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada sent warm thoughts out to Atomic, which has always been known for in-store signing events and convention appearances. (You've probably seen their van at some point.) "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" reviews are still coming in, too. Check out a couple of those and a concern about "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn" after the jump.

The Dark Knight RisesA hijacked football stadium, a Batpod-riding cat burglar, a possible Batwing sighting and countless Tumblers and probable spoilers later, "The Dark Knight Rises" has finally left Pittsburgh.

Latino Review has a great collection of news on Christopher Nolan's final Batman film this morning, the biggest item being the production's completion of the Pittsburgh shoot.

The Nolan led team have placed an advertisement in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette with the words "Thank You PIttsburgh" in big capital letters set to the backdrop of the familiar "Dark Knight Rises" poster.

"Conan The Barbarian," the latest adaptation of Robert E. Howard's classic pulp hero, slashed its way into theaters this weekend, marking the franchise's first return to the big-screen since 1984's "Conan The Destroyer." The film takes a fresh start to the Conan legend, and bears no relation to the prior Arnold Schwarzenegger films, but it still draws upon the world that Howard created for his barbaric protagonist.

With that in mind, we're going to take a look at the influences Howard's work had on the film, and examine how closely the film cleaves to the mythos he established.
