Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye — when it comes to the roster of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, we've got that well and covered by now. But what we don't have quite as clear a sense of is who our heroes will be facing when "The Avengers" assembles in May 2012.
Tom Hiddleston is certainly back in business as the mischievous trickster god Loki, but the Asgardian antagonist is not at it alone. Rumors have been swirling about the identity of Loki's allies since well before shooting on "The Avengers" even began, with the most popular theory centering on the shape-shifting Skrulls. But still, with multiple convention appearances and its first official trailer under its belt, the "Avengers" bad guys remain unrevealed… and Hiddleston isn't going to blow their cover.
"Where are the snipers? Which window are they aiming at?" he joked when MTV News asked him when we'll find out who's fighting on Loki's side in "The Avengers." Though he wouldn't identify his supervillain friends by name, Hiddleston did say that whoever Loki's allies are will surely please longtime Marvel Comics readers. Looks like whoever that threat is — Skrull, Thanos or something else entirely — it's a familiar one.
"Loki has help, obviously," said the actor. "If Thor could beat Loki on his own at the end of 'Thor,' then why, logically, would it take eight [superheroes] this time?"
But even without backup, Loki's a dangerous threat all on his own this time around.
"There's an evolution to Loki as well," said Hiddleston. "He's more self-possessed, he's more menacing, and I think he knows [himself]. If the Loki in 'Thor' was about a spiritual confusion — 'Who am I? How do I belong in this world?' — the Loki in 'Avengers' is, 'I know exactly who I am, and I'm going to make this world belong to me.'"
