"The Avengers” may be the most ambitious Marvel movie of all time, but that doesn’t mean its seasoned engineers looked past the creative use of tools accessible to most laypeople.
Seamus McGarvey, director of photography for Marvel Studios and “Avengers” cinematographer, just revealed in an interview with the Irish Film & Television Network that he used an iPhone to film some scenes for the blockbuster team-up, and we’ve already seen at least one in the trailer.
McGarvey, who spoke primarily about another prestigious project, “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” joked that the superhero epic, with its abundance of equipment, crew members and money, was “almost like a different medium” to him. In disclosing the detail of his iPhone-filmed scenes, the filmmaker explained why effective and inspired work doesn’t need to be expensive.
“The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On ‘The Avengers,’ I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.”
Which “Avengers” trailer shots do you think might have been filmed using an iPhone? Our guess is one hazy low-lying glimpse of Thor and Mjolnir around :47, if there’s another we are at a loss to guess, not to mention very impressed.
Do you think it's possible for any other scenes from the "Avengers" trailer to have been shot using an iPhone? Let us know what you think in the comment section or on Twitter!
