Operation Early Bird

It is safe to say that the viral marketing campaign for "The Dark Knight Rises" is in full swing. After two confidential CIA files appeared online, a new document and a countdown page may be the latest additions to the campaign.

Check out our "Dark Knight Rises" viral survival guide!

A picture sent out from the Twitter handle @thefirerises, the profile used to reveal the first picture of Tom Hardy as Bane, was another censored document. It continues the narrative from the previous two docs, but references "Operation Early Bird," the proposed black op to retrieve the missing nuclear physicist that's set to take place on December 9 at 10 am PST.

Arkham

If you can't get enough "Batman: Arkham City," Warner Bros. Interactive and NetherRealm Studios are serving up some butt-kicking combat on your iOS device. Out now on the iTunes App Store, "Batman: Arkham City Lockdown" doesn't look like an exact port of this year's hit game, but more like a fighting game set in the titular prison-city.

According to today's press release, the game is based on the "Arkham" franchise (obviously), but the focus appears to be "one-on-one" combat. I haven't had a chance to play the game yet, but given NetherRealm's pedigree ("Mortal Kombat"), I'm optimistic that the game might actually play well. Well, if it can get past the touch-screen hurdle.

In 2012, Nick star and musician Drake Bell will voice Peter Parker on the Disney XD animated series, “Ultimate Spider-Man.” With a whole slew of eps set to air next year, Drake recently stopped by MTV News HQ to rave about suiting up as Spidey for the small screen.

“It’s awesome. The animation is unbelievable. It’s 2-D but it’s the coolest 2-D animation you’ve ever seen," he told MTV News. "It's going to be really true [to the comics]."

Joker

Jerry Robinson, one of the men responsible for creating one of the most memorable and recognizable characters in all of pop culture, the Joker, died early December 8 in his sleep.

MTV Geek has a look back at the life of Robinson, in addition to a fascinating interview conducted with him at Baltimore Comic-Con in 2010. Be sure to head over to learn more about the artist and his amazing accomplishments.

The character Robinson helped bring to life, along side Batman co-creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger, took on a life of his own and expanded far beyond the limits of his original medium, comic books. So in memory of his creator, we take a look at the five greatest Joker moments outside of print.

Sometimes a superhero isn't lucky enough to have superpowers, but hey, it never stopped Batman. Even those fortunate enough to have a few tricks up their mythical alloy sleeves can use the help of a great gadget once in a while.

This year's comic books movies were filled with amazing gadgets, doohickeys and thingamabobs that gave their respective superheroes or villains the extra boost they needed. Here's a look at the top five comic book movie gadgets from 2011.

Dark Knight Rises

The viral marketing campaign for “The Dark Knight” was fantastic -- pixel-by-pixel revelation of the Joker’s face, a Comic-Con scavenger hunt, websites supporting Harvey Dent’s run for district attorney, and more. Taking place over a year and a half leading up to the film’s 2008 release, the "Dark Knight" viral component helped build an unstoppable head of steam, no doubt part of why the movie grossed as much money as it did.

"The Dark Knight Rises" doesn’t really need that much work -- everyone is pretty much permanently stoked, and will remain so until next summer. (That could change if we find out Bruce really went crazy when his parents died, and everything we’ve seen has been an insane asylum fever dream. Let’s hope not!) But there’s a neat little marketing campaign going on for this one too, sparked today by a mysterious CIA Bulletin posted by Wired.

Batman

"The Dark Knight Rises" is the conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, but is there a chance that Nolan might eventually return to Gotham City? In a new interview with Gary Oldman, the "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" actor spoke about the possibility of future Batman movies and the level of involvement we might be able to expect from him and Nolan.

Spider-Man

I want "The Amazing Spider-Man" (the movie) to be great, I really do. Along those same lines, hope fills my heart that in some magical moment of brilliance, the associated videogame from Activision and Beenox will actually work as an enjoyable representation of the property. Of course, that's still up in the air right now, as the only details surrounding the title are gleaned from concept art.

Thankfully, that's about to change on Saturday night. Activision has announced that a world premiere trailer will air during the Spike Video Games Awards on December 10. In the meantime, we get a – albeit very brief – glimpse at the game today, thanks to a brand-new teaser trailer (via HeroHQ).

Thor

Perhaps the saddest movie news of the week broke last night when it was announced that Patty Jenkins would no longer direct "Thor 2." The "Monster" director seemed like an inspired choice that could have resulted in a great full-up to Kenneth Branagh's solid first entry. Rumor has it that Marvel is already out to agencies looking for a replacement for Jenkins, so we thought we'd save them some time and present a short list of directors we think could rule the halls of Asgard.

Bradley Cooper wasn’t an obvious pick to play the Crow. His acting resume hasn’t put him in the types of darker, goth-styled films that would suggest he’d be ready to slather his face in black paint and brooding scowls. But the same could’ve been said about a pre-"Dark Knight" Heath Ledger, so maybe the concept art we saw would’ve worked out.

As Cooper’s dropped out of the "Crow" remake, we’ll never know how it could’ve gone. Over at Empire, he talks about how things fell apart.
