Arkham City

There's a chance "Batman: Arkham City" could take the Game of the Year honor during Spike's Video Game Awards show this Saturday; I'm still betting it's "Skyrim," though. In the meantime, why not spend some time flying high above the Arkham City skyline dressed in your favorite Batman duds? The previously announced "Arkham City Skins Pack" is now available, and what better way to spend your holidays than dressed as a mentally unstable man in tights?

Each time the topic of a follow-up to "X-Men: First Class" comes up, everyone seems eager to do it. Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy have both opened up about collaborating on ideas. Now top Fox exec Tom Rothman says that he wants it to happen: "We're trying like hell. We're trying as hard as we can. We really want to do it. We're planning to do it."

MTV News caught up with Rothman at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, and they spoke about the prospects continuing that series and how its success has changed how the studio approaches superhero movies.

"The reason, in addition to those two guys and Matthew Vaughn, that it was as good as it was that the script was really good," Rothman said. "The key to making a great continuing franchise is to have a great script, so we're working hard on it."

Thor

Whosoever holds this hammer, if he (or she) be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor — but sadly, it looks like director Patty Jenkins isn't going to be that person.

News broke late Tuesday evening (December 6) that Jenkins, previously linked to "Thor 2," has dropped out of the project due to creative differences. Marvel Studios is back on the hunt for a new director to helm the second big-screen trip to Asgard, though no names have emerged as front runners just yet.

Comic books weave threads through all popular media. What once lived in attics and dingy strip mall stores are now headlining box offices, Broadway stages, and magazine covers. So how far do these tentacles stretch? This column looks at what’s popular, and uncovers some of the hidden connections to the comic world!

This week: FX’s "Sons of Anarchy"! Biker gangs get a bad rap, and the members of SAMCRO absolutely deserve it. Murder, gun-running, porn, dope… it’s everything you expect from a no-holds-barred drama about the seedy gangs that control the underbelly of America. And some pretty big connections to the comic world!

Dark Knight Rises

There are plenty of new toys in "The Dark Knight Rises" to get excited about -- the introduction of Bane, the fast-forward timeline, Anne Hathaway in black leather. But there’s plenty of room to update the old toys as well -- namely, Hans Zimmer’s mood-setting score, among the best traits of the Bat-trilogy.

Zimmer’s been tight-lipped about details of the film; indeed, he playfully deflected our questions earlier this year. But he isn’t so reluctant to talk about the things he’s added for his score, third overall for the Nolan-verse. Upping the ante for “Rises,” Zimmer crowd-sourced thousands of fans to record their shouting for an experimental cacophony.

Pinball

Last week, we told you about all-new Marvel tables added to Zen Studios' "Zen Pinball" (iOS) and "Zen Pinball THD" (Tegra-powered Android). If you happened upon that article, you likely gained the impression that I am quite fond of Marvel pinball games, and I suppose that's true, if by "fond" you mean "play way too much." Zen makes some awfully addictive games, and while I'm having a good time with Captain America on iOS, it's still not quite as comfortable as the console versions.

Luckily, Marvel and Zen Studios have not sat on their laurels, and fans of "Pinball FX 2" and "Marvel Pinball" can look forward to smacking the paddles with new content next week.

Turf

Having launched out of the production partnership of Chris Bender and J.C. Spink in 1998, Benderspink may still be a relatively new company, but it’s never slowed in securing a ton of comic-based entertainment properties, and now the team is staking out even more turf among untapped comic books.

Deadline reports that Benderspink has optioned the rights to "Turf," a five issue miniseries released in April of 2010 and set in 1920s Prohibition Era New York. But before you paint a picture of the period project, know that the Image-published story, written by Jonathan Ross and Tommy Lee Edwards, bears little resemblance to “Boardwalk Empire.”

Maria Hill

[UPDATE: Vulture has updated their original story with a new quote from Smulders correcting her prior comments: "And if she had a superpower it would be that she is hyperintelligent." Looks like no powers for Maria -- nothing to see here! Our original story follows.]

In the comics, ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill is a born hellraiser unafraid to challenge Nick Fury, Tony Stark, Captain America or anyone else who might undermine her authority. But in the movies, S.H.I.E.L.D. is firmly in the pro-Avengers camp, leaving some wiggle room for Hill’s presence.

In an interview with Vulture, Cobie Smulders made a seemingly throwaway comment about her character’s changes. “They’re very sleek, and very leather,” she said, speaking of Hill’s costumes. “And she has superpowers and is hyperintelligent; a very nice, fine woman who has all the answers.”

Since the premiere of "Once Upon a Time," one of ABC's biggest hits from the fall, fans of the comic book series "Fables" have pointed out similarities between the two, creating some bad blood between either side's fans. Both stories center on fairy tale characters transplanted into a modern day setting, and with the premiere of "Once," some fans of "Fable" have cried accusations of plagiarism and theft.

In what he referred to as "a call to disarm," "Fables" creator Bill Willingham posted an editorial on Comic Book Resources to give his take on the feud and to dispel any notion that he may feel similarly to his enraged fans.

Comic book movie heroes and villains don't always make it out of their films alive. The baddies have a long tradition of biting the bullet by movie's end, but even some of the good guys are likely to go out in glorious fashion. The comic book flicks of 2011 provided more than a few awesome death scenes, but five of them stand above the rest in our eyes.

Here are the Splash Page team's picks for best comic book movie deaths in 2011 — needless to say, spoilers ahead!
