The new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" feature film might have just received a shiny new release date, but it also is apparently getting a brand new backstory as well. Producer Michael Bay revealed at the Nickelodeon Upfront in New York that this take on the beloved story will come from different origins than what we've seen before.
"When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie," Bay said (via Stuff We Like). "These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."
Aliens, huh? It sounds a little "Transformers." Though maybe aliens make more sense than just having four martial arts-inclined talking turtles hanging around the NYC sewage system eating pizza just for the hell of it, right? Hopefully "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" doesn't spend too much time delving into the turtles' extraterrestrial past and just hits the ground rolling with the story. Some tinkering is okay, but too much could ruin the film.
So far, this "TMNT" reboot hasn't really aligned itself with our list of filmmaking suggestions. Fans will either embrace or reject the whole alien backstory, but hopefully the rest of the movie really lives up to what everyone has come to known and love about the teenage mutant ninja turtles.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is due in theaters Christmas 2013.
