Stan Lee is one of the coolest dudes in history. Not only is he the creator behind innumerable legendary comic book heroes, he's also incredibly charming, and fans look forward to his obligatory cameo in just about every Marvel film. So as Activision is wrapping up its "Amazing Spider-Man" game – a tie-in for the upcoming film – it seems like a no-brainer to involve Lee in the project. What I didn't expect, however, is to see the eighty-nine year old legend swinging from a web through New York City.
Yes, Stan The Man is going to be a playable character in "The Amazing Spider-Man." He'll even make snappy quips as you stare in wonder at the absurdity of the "Stan Lee Adventure Pack." Speaking to Yahoo!, Lee joked about his incredible agility on display for the game.
"This wasn't easy for me, practicing all these moves. I'm just afraid when they see me do it, that may put Spider-Man in the shadows," said Lee. "I hope they don't have me looking too realistic and life-like. That would be tough for the Spider-Man fans. I swung through the city like an average guy would do, instead of giving it my usual derring-do."
See, this is why I love comic books and videogames. What other mediums can offer the pure escapism, the fantastical dream, to soar high above Manhattan as an old man in a suit? Granted, the in-game Stan Lee (pictured above) sort of looks like Rupert Murdoch with painful gas, but I guess the effect is the same.
The special mission starring Lee is unlockable through a pre-order deal at Amazon. It's a good thing Activision made the decision to include Lee – according to The Man, his brief "Avengers" cameo was the key to box office success.
"The cameo is what is causing [the film] to do such good business," said Lee. "People miss it the first time, so they buy another ticket to see it again."
Coolest dude ever.
