Fans are excited for "Ant-Man," and why shouldn't they be? "The Avengers" has breathed new life into the superhero landscape, with folks hungrier than ever for more from the Marvel Studios team. Of all their possible projects, "Ant-Man" is among the most alluring. It takes an unusual character with an unusual skill-set and puts him in the hands of Edgar Wright, one of the best filmmakers working today. Who doesn't want to see the "Scott Pilgrim" director bring the pint-sized hero to the big-screen?
Recently, we've seen and heard teases that "Ant-Man" might be moving forward soon. For his own part, Wright weighed in on the project when speaking with the Empire Online podcast. It sounds as though "things are happening" on the "Ant-Man" front (among other fronts), and Wright gives a very fair reason for why things haven't moved at the pace some fans might like.
A transcription of Wright's comments, courtesy of Steve Sunu at Comic Book Resources:
"I get quite superstitious because I don't feel like anybody -- websites and stuff -- quite understands how hard long it takes and because the film websites update hourly, it's like 'What's the f---ing hold up? Just make it. Why isn't it coming out tomorrow?'" Wright told Empire. "But every film that I've made has taken like three years. Each one, it's been three years between movies. I would love for that gap to be shorter, but the truth is there's -- it's almost like a holding pattern. There are planes in there air and you have to figure out which one is going to land before they all crash. … Yes, things are happening and other things are happening on other things as well. … There's some interesting plates spinning and I ideally hope we'll be shooting this year."
As I said, Wright's response is very fair, and we'll own our part in keeping you guys informed about all the "Ant-Man" minutia we possibly can. We're just excited for a Wright-helmed "Ant-Man" movie, that's all!
Also, I wouldn't take Wright's comment that he "ideally hope[s] we'll be shooting this year" to refer to "Ant-Man" necessarily. The filmmaker referred to numerous spinning plates, and we already know that his upcoming collaboration with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on "The World's End" is gearing up to go later this year; he could be talking about that. Either way, we're very eager to see another Wright movie soon, whether it's about Ant-Man or not. For now, we'll happily get our fix listening to his awesome interview with Empire. His "Ant-Man" comments come in around the 18-minute mark.
