"The Avengers" versus aliens, or Taylor Kitsch versus aliens — following the performance of "John Carter" back in March, which side would you take? Apparently the answer is decisively the former, as Earth's mightiest heroes continue their domination over the box office while new competitors like "Battleship" can do nothing but look on.
Once again, "Marvel's The Avengers" took home the first place prize at the domestic box office this weekend, taking in $55 million to bring its domestic tally to $457 million. Worldwide, it's sitting atop a gold pile worth $1.2 billion, making it the fourth highest grossing movie of all time with plenty of room to grow. Few people predict that "Avengers" will ultimately dethrone the top two record-holders "Avatar" and "Titanic," but it should be able to clear "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" for third place before all is said and done.
Stay tuned to MTV News later in the day for more box office updates.
