It was an awesome run while it lasted. "Marvel's The Avengers" surrendered the top spot at the domestic box office to "Men in Black 3" over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, breaking its three-weekend streak as the reigning king of the summer box office.
Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' long awaited return to "MIB" headquarters yielded a first place win worth $70 million over the four-day weekend, with an estimated $203 million worldwide. That's not quite as high a result as some had expected — many analysts projected as high as over $100 million for Smith's first starring role in four years — and it's certainly not even close to the mammoth that is "Avengers," which is still clearing records left and right: the movie has crossed the $500 million mark domestically and is very, very close to passing "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" as the third highest grossing film of all time.
