"The Walking Dead" will introduce several new characters in season three, chief among them Michonne the wandering samurai and Philip "The Governor" Blake. We've already seen a first look at the former — both in teasery silhouette form and a better look at Danai Gurira as the character — and now we've got our first look at The Governor as well.
Not that that's necessarily a complaint, mind you, but he just doesn't look anything like the ruthless dictator we know and hate from the comics. There's something about Blake's goofy supervillain-levels mustache and hair that really make that character for me, and I'm sorry to see those elements go—though, admittedly, there are visual ideas that work on the page that would be laughable on screen.
Also, let's look back at what series creator Robert Kirkman told us about the hiring of Morrissey a few months ago.
"He recognized that this character is a villain," he said of why the actor was cast in the role. "A lot of people came in and were like, 'But he's a good guy inside, right?' They want that nuance, and that's definitely important. We definitely have that. The Governor isn't a one-note character; there are a lot of layers to that onion. But this is a sadistic guy. David Morrissey, more than any other actor, really wanted to sink his teeth into that role. He wants to embrace everything there is about the Governor."
So, if he really does get The Governor, then it shouldn't much matter if he doesn't look like him. Still, I won't lie… I'm going to miss the look of Blake from the comics.
