Apparently Sony's extensive marketing campaign for "The Amazing Spider-Man" has paid off. According to some pre-release tracking numbers, the upcoming reboot of the "Spider-Man" franchise is due for a huge opening weekend.
The combination of the flick's hype machine and its July 4th week release date have "The Amazing Spider-Man" projected for an estimated $125 million opening weekend, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Of course, the movie is coming out on a Tuesday, which means the "weekend" counts for six days. Still, considering how only a few movies this blockbuster season have been certified hits, this is a very big win for Sony.
Interestingly enough, Marc Webb's take on Spidey's superhero origin story is tracking very well with men and with women under the age of 25. That's a big accomplishment for the director, who previously had only helmed the quirky romantic comedy "(500) Days of Summer."
That's still not enough to topple "The Avengers'" massive opening weekend, though. The Marvel ensemble superhero movies destroyed all records in its path, busting out a $207 million opening weekend. Many still believe that the only movie with a chance of beating that record this summer is "The Dark Knight Rises."
Starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, “The Amazing Spider-Man” focuses on Peter Parker’s journey to discover the secret of his parents’ disappearance. That brings him face-to-face with Dr. Curt Connors, played by Rhys Ifans, who ends up becoming the film’s villain, The Lizard. It’s due in theaters on July 3.
