If there's one shoe begging to be dropped (please forgive the horrible pun) in the "Amazing Spider-Man" universe, it's the death of Gwen Stacy.
Things do not end well for Peter Parker and his first love, as fans of the "Spider-Man" comic books know all too well. Gwen, like so many of the people caught in Peter's web, dies tragically at the hands of an impossible-to-stop menace, further galvanizing our hero's quest to treat his great powers with great responsibility.
Whether or not the death takes place in "Amazing" remains to be seen, but actress Emma Stone has made it clear that she's rooting for Gwen's death — and for all the right reasons, as she recently told MTV News.
"I read all about [the death of] Gwen, and I thought that was so amazing," she told MTV's Josh Horowitz at the recent "Spider-Man" junket. "That was part of the reason why I was kind of drawn to the role, that mark on pop-culture history."
"I spoke to the people behind the movie, and they said, 'Yeah, we're planning on staying true to the comics.' And I was like, 'If you're making a movie like this, that's something I want to be a part of,'" she added. "That is so shocking and horrifying and kind of beautiful in some way. The fact that people unsubscribed and burned their copies — I like anything that causes some kind of upheaval."
For his part, director Marc Webb would not confirm or deny the eventual demise of Gwen Stacy. All he would say is this: "The ultimate tragedy of Gwen Stacy is a really provocative and powerful part of the Spider-Man canon. … I think it would be really extraordinary to explore that."
Dangerous words, my friends...
