"The Wolverine" made six major casting announcements earlier this week with the hiring of Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima. It looks like another name is about to be added to that growing cast list, and it's one that Stateside fans are much more familiar with.
Twitch reports that "Total Recall" actress Jessica Biel has been offered the role of Viper in "The Wolverine," the pseudo-sequel to 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." There are numerous versions of Viper throughout Marvel Comics lore, and the one Biel is being courted for is described as "a complex character who at one point was a peer of Logan's as well as an enemy. She was a major player in criminal organization Hydra and, in one story arc, blackmailed Logan into marrying her."
If Biel accepts the role, it would be her first comic book movie appearance since her turn as Abigail Whistler in "Blade Trinity." That movie wasn't a major win with fans, but her work alongside Ryan Reynolds as Hannibal King is widely agreed upon as a highlight of the film; consider us hopeful for her casting here.
UPDATE: Deadline reports that Biel has accepted the role.
Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, "The Wolverine" hits theaters on July 26, 2013.
