Big news in Asgard today! Weeks after Mads Mikkelsen walked away from the villain role of "Thor: The Dark World," we now officially have a replacement in the form of Christopher Eccleston. Not only that, we know who Eccleston is playing — and it's pretty much who we all thought the villain of the "Thor" sequel would be.
Deadline has the news that Eccleston has joined the "Dark World" cast as Malekith the Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. Both Malekith and the Dark Elves have long been rumored as big parts of the "Thor" sequel, and the casting of Eccleston today only confirms the news of who the thunder god will be going up against in his next big-screen adventure.
The official confirmation of Malekith's presence in "Dark World" only leads to more questions, of course. The big one being, will he gets his hands on the Casket of Ancient Winters, the artifact wielded by the frost giants in the first "Thor" movie? Malekith and the Casket have (wait for it) ancient history in the comic books, and with it already existing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it feels like a sure bet to pop up in the "Thor" sequel.
Overall, I'm very pleased with Eccleston's casting, even if I was holding out hope for the Enchantress to make her Marvel movie debut this time around. I suppose that's still not out of the question, but it certainly seems like we'll be spending more time with the Dark Elves than anyone else.
