We no longer have to call it "X-Men: First Class 2" or "X-Men: Second Class" or "X-Men: The New New Class" or whatever it is we were calling it — Matthew Vaughn's "First Class" sequel is officially going by the evocative title "Days of Future Past."
"It's going to be very ambitious. It's called 'Days of Future Past,' and it deals with aspects of that comic, and also some very new things," said Singer. "I don't want to give anything away, but Matthew Vaughn is directing it, and we're very excited about it."
In the two-part "Days of Future Past" comics, readers are brought into an alternate future where mutants are being regularly targeted by Sentinels. It's an ambitious story indeed, considering that the two principal characters of that storyline — Kitty Pryde and Wolverine — either never appeared in "First Class," or only had a brief (but hilarious) cameo, as is the case with the latter character.
But perhaps there's a way to bring Hugh Jackman's Logan into the proceedings for "Days of Future Past," as Singer suggested that the "X-Men" movies might soon open up in the same way as the Marvel Studios universe.
"I think there's a strong desire to broaden out the universe," he said. "The X-Men universe is every bit on its own as strong as the Marvel universe, and I think it's time to reach out and explore it, and perhaps even bring some connectivity between the films, as Marvel has done so well. You may see some of that."
