It's official. Earth's Mightiest Heroes will be back up on the silver screen in 2015. With "The Avengers" already being the highest grossing movie of the year, and the third highest grossing movie of all time, odds are that "The Avengers 2" is sure to be another huge success. Especially with fan-favorite writer/director Joss Whedon back in the driver's seat.
Not much is currently known about the film, other than the fact that Thanos will be the main villain. Although there has been a ton of speculation about the highly anticipated sequel thus far, with a release date of May 1, 2015, it seems like we'll be waiting quite a while for some answers. But don't worry! We're here to help. Click past the jump for our list of productive ways to help pass the time!
Brush Up On Your Thanos Knowledge
The Mad Titan Thanos is one of the biggest and baddest villains of the Marvel Universe. If you didn't recognize that big purple face at the end of the first "Avengers" movie, then now is the time to catch up. We recommend starting with "The Infinity Gauntlet" being as there's a good chance that it's source material for "The Avengers 2" and also one of Thanos' most memorable feats. After that, feel free to read "Silver Surfer: The Rebirth Thanos," in which we see how Thanos was able to recover all six of the Infinity gems, or "The Thanos Imperative," which features Thanos in a more heroic light while fighting alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Eat Lots of Shawarma
Joss Whedon's return to "The Avengers 2" means one thing and one thing only: be prepared for some witty banter and some unexpected sight gags. Arguably, what made "The Avengers" such a fantastically fun movie is the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Whether it's a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent playing Galaga, Captain America tipping Nick Fury, the Hulk punching Thor for no apparent reason, or all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes awkwardly eating shawarma in silence, Joss Whedon knows that a truly great superhero movie is one that can make you laugh as well.
Make an "Avengers" Fan Film
What better way to fight the boredom that comes with waiting 3 years for the "Avengers" sequel than by making your own "Avengers" sequel? Just think of the possibilities! You could explore that budding bro-mance between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. You could dig into that Budapest mission that Black Widow and Hawkeye remember so differently. You could even have Captain America and Thor make out with each other! Obviously, the only foreseeable downside would be that your "Avengers" movie wouldn't have any A-list celebrities in it. But we're sure that your friends and your mom will do just fine.
Re-watch Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Have you seen "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor," "Captain America: The First Avenger," and "The Avengers" in order anytime recently? Well, what are you waiting for? Odds are there are some awesome little tidbits that you may have missed upon first watch, i.e. Captain America's shield in "Iron Man 2" and Hawkeye's cameo in "Thor." If you don't already own all of those movies, they'll be available all together for the first time ever on September 25th in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Limited Edition Six-Movie Collector's Set."
Get In Line
As we mentioned before, "The Avengers" is the third highest grossing movie of all time. What makes you think the sequel will be any different? Now that you know when the release date is, your best bet is to buy some camping equipment and get on line for that first midnight screening while it's still relatively empty. Otherwise, you might be forced to see it the next day. Only losers don't go to midnight screenings. You don't want to be a loser, do you?
