How do you plead? When it comes to the new TV spot for "Dredd," we're guilty as charged for enjoying the teaser a bit too much.
The 60-second trailer has combined everything that we're most excited about for the upcoming movie: its gritty realism, a butt-kicking cast and a sense of seriousness that had been missing from previous adaptations of the 2000 AD comic. Leading man Karl Urban is all action hero in this trailer, while "Juno" star Olivia Thirlby steps up to the plate as his rookie sidekick and Lena Headey is a requisitely crazy villain Ma-Ma Madrigal.
It's clear that this trailer is supposed to serve as a refresher to those out there who aren't too familiar with Judge Dredd's legacy. The world of Mega-City One is overrun by crime and the drug Slo-Mo, which is being spread by the villainess Ma-Ma. It's up to the city's Judges to bring order to the city and topple Ma-Ma's regime. As Dredd says in the trailer, "Ma-Ma's not the law. I'm the law."
Everything we've heard about the movie has told us that it's going to be great, and hopefully this new TV spot will start convincing the masses as well. "Dredd is the ultimate lawman," Karl Urban explained in a recent featurette. "He is judge, jury and executioner." If the film lives up to the promise shown in the trailers that have been released then we can't see how we'll be disappointed with the final product.
"Dredd" is due out in theaters on September 21, so expect a month more of impressive advertising promising, "Judgment is coming."
