A while back, there were a few rumors being tossed around about a "Black Panther" movie being in the works over at Marvel Studios. Well, it's been over two months now and there has not been a single update or hint as to whether or not any of these rumors were true in the first place. Not to mention the fact that Marvel is pretty booked through 2015 at the moment, making the chances of a "Black Panther" movie happening anytime soon highly unlikely.
However, it's quite obvious that Marvel still has great interest in the Wakandan chieftain, what with the short-lived "Black Panther" animated series and his late addition to the "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" cartoon. Clearly, Marvel is attempting to upgrade Black Panther to a mainstream status superhero, but will they be able to make the character popular enough before the "Avengers" sequel?
Read on for our rundown of Wakanda's finest hero and how he could fit into "Avengers 2."
Who?
The title of Black Panther has been passed down from one Wakandan leader to the next for many centuries now. As the current Black Panther, T'Challa is not only leader of the Panther Tribe but also every other tribe in the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Although the title of Black Panther is hereditary, it still must be earned. T'Challa gained said title by defeating all of the various champions from each of the Wakandan tribes in hand-to-hand combat.
Each Black Panther must eat a special heart-shaped herb at the time of their inauguration, mystically connecting them to the Wakandan Panther God and endowing them with superhuman strength, speed, and agility. In addition to these enhances abilities, T'Challa is a skilled hunter, tracker, politician, inventor, and scientist, with a Ph.D. in physics from his time at Oxford University. As king of Wakanda, T'Challa also has access to his nation's vast array of magical artifacts, highly advanced technology, and surplus supply of vibranium.
Why?
T'Challa would make an awesome addition to Earth's Mightiest Heroes for three key reasons. One, that access to his nation's magical artifacts and advanced technology that I mentioned earlier could really come in handy when up against someone as cosmically powerful as Thanos. Two, he's one of the eight smartest people on the entire planet. You can never have enough geniuses on your team! And three, The Avengers is in desperate need of some diversity. Sure, they have Black Widow and Nick Fury, but other than that the team is just comprised of uptight white guys. Well, who better to fill that gap than the first black superhero in all of mainstream American comics?
How?
In the past, there have been rumors of a "Black Panther" movie being released as soon as 2014. However, seeing as Marvel has already announced their plans to release "Guardians of the Galaxy" and possibly Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man" that year as well, it would appear as though "Black Panther" has been shelved for the time being. Obviously, a character with such a unique back story and power-set deserves to be introduced within the universe of his own feature film. Let's just hope that Marvel has a chance to make that film sometime before May 1, 2015!
In Assembling Avengers, we're picking a new Marvel Comics superhero every week and arguing why they deserve a spot on the roster for Earth's mightiest sequel. Let us know which heroes you want to see in the next "Avengers" in the comments or on Twitter!
