"Iron Man 3," perhaps even more so than its predecessors, has an all-star cast. Chief among the newcomers are Sir Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce, both of whom are starring as antagonists The Mandarin and Aldrich Killian. But in the case of the latter baddie, don't get too attached — according to Pearce himself, his role amounts to little more than a cameo.
Speaking with Vulture about his work on "Iron Man 3," Pearce was quick to downplay the size of his role. "Prometheus and Iron Man are really kind of cameo stuff," he said.
"I mean, on some level, it's tricky because you feel like a bit of an outsider," he continued of his "Iron Man" experience. "You don’t really live the experience that you do when you're there all day every day with everybody. But at the same time, it can be more fun sometimes because you're just working in concentrated spurts."
As for what attracted him to "Iron Man 3," Pearce pointed to the history of the Robert Downey Jr. franchise and the tone it's established for superhero films in recent years.
"And I think that, based on the first two movies, there's a great chemistry between Robert [Downey Jr.] and Gwyneth [Paltrow]," he said, "and I just think the films have a fun, joyful sort of quality about them. I've just enjoyed them. So I just felt like I wanted to be a part of this."
