If you're like us here at MTV News, then you simply cannot wait for 2015. But even though "The Avengers 2" is still over three years away, we've already taken it upon ourselves to discuss the possibility of adding some of Marvel's lesser known superheroes to the roster for Earth's Mightiest sequel. This week, we'll be discussing a character who most recently played a crucial role in the "Avengers Vs. X-Men" saga: Iron Fist.
Drawing from his mastery of all martial arts and not from inherent superpowers, Daniel Rand is currently a full-fledged member of both the New Avengers and the Defenders in the comic book universe. So what are the chances of seeing the Immortal Iron Fist up on the big screen in 2015? Click past the jump to find out!
Who?
Born the son of a wealthy entrepreneur and a famed socialite, Daniel Rand quickly becomes an orphan on the long and treacherous journey to the mystical city of K'un L'un. After being saved by a group of archers, the grieving young boy is taken to the hooded ruler of K'un L'un, Yü-Ti the Dragon Lord. Daniel is then apprenticed to Lei Kung the Thunderer, who instructs him in the ways of the martial arts. Eventually, Daniel proves himself to be the most gifted of Lei Kung's students.
At the age of 19, Daniel is given the opportunity to obtain the power of the Iron Fist by defeating an ancient dragon known as Shou-Lao the Undying. After defeating the dragon, and gaining a dragon-shaped scar in the process, Daniel thrusts his fists into the molten heart of the Undying and is subsequently infused with the dragon's superhuman energy, making him the latest in a long line of Iron Fists.
Why?
As Iron Fist, Daniel is capable of focusing his chi in order to enhance his already exceptional martial arts skills as well as his strength, speed, agility, and durability. Often times, he will concentrate all of his body's natural energies onto his clenched fists, imbuing in them a superhuman hardness and making them impervious to pain or injury of any kind. While this skill may not initially seem like something that would come in handy during a cosmic battle with the likes of Thanos, Daniel also has the ability to heal those around him by focusing his chi energy outwards. Recently, Daniel has discovered that he can extend his chi to the field of energy around his body transforming himself into "a human bullet." Just imagine how much it would hurt if someone like the Hulk threw a human bullet at you.
How?
Although an "Iron Fist" movie has been in the works for several years now, with Rich Wilkes reportedly being hired to write the screenplay in 2010, it seems highly unlikely that we'll be seeing a Marvel movie starring Daniel Rand anytime soon. However, who's to say that the character can't be introduced in one of the other various superhero movies that Marvel currently has on its plate? Iron Man, being one of the first superheroes that Iron Fist ever encountered, seems like a pretty good candidate to us. Especially since "Iron Man 3" will be reportedly shooting in China sometime soon, the perfect place to stage the mystical city of K'un L'un.
In Assembling Avengers, we're picking a new Marvel Comics superhero every week and arguing why they deserve a spot on the roster for Earth's mightiest sequel. Let us know which heroes you want to see in the next "Avengers" in the comments or on Twitter!
