When it was first announced that Edgar Wright would be directing an "Ant-Man" movie for Marvel Studios, fanboys and fangirls all across the country were immediately filled with anticipation. Thankfully, now that "Ant-Man" has a release date (November 6, 2015) we at least know how much longer we have to wait to see it. But there's still one question about "Ant-Man" that has yet to be answered: Will the Wasp be making an appearance in the film as well?
The Wasp, a.k.a. Janet Van Dyne, was created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In fact, she was one of the founding members of the original Avengers team in the Marvel comic book universe. So what are the chances that the Wasp will be joining the Avengers in Earth's Mightiest Sequel? Click past the jump to find out!
Born in Cresskill, New Jersey, Janet Van Dyne is the daughter of a famous scientist named Vernon Van Dyne. Early on in her life, Janet becomes an irresponsible, self-centered debutante, feeding off of her father's wealth. But that all changes after a failed experiment in which Dr. Van Dyne accidentally opens a portal to an alternate dimension, unleashing a deadly alien creature upon our world and subsequently killing Dr. Van Dyne.
Luckily, Dr. Van Dyne's assistant, Hank Pym (a.k.a. Ant-Man), had just recently created a substance called "Pym Particles," which enables whoever wields it to grow or shrink in size at will. Pym proceeds to put Janet through a biochemical procedure that grants her the ability to harness his pym particles, grow wings, and fire energy blasts from her wrists. Donning a new costume and calling herself the Wasp, Janet and Pym team up in order to put a stop to the alien that killed her father once and for all.
As we mentioned earlier, the Wasp is one of the original Avengers. Having her be a part of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would not only be an awesome nod to the comic book source material, but it would also help even out the men to women ratio on the team which is right now leaning pretty heavily in favor of the men. Obviously, it would be amazing to have both Ant-Man and the Wasp join the team for "The Avengers 2"; adding that much needed romantic element to the team's dynamic. However, we'd settle for just Janet any day of the week. After all, Ant-Man is already getting his own movie.
Clearly, the easiest way to introduce Janet Van Dyne to the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be to have her play a huge part in Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man" movie. However, with a release date of November 6th, 2015, people won't get a chance to see "Ant-Man" until after "The Avengers 2" has already been in theaters for a few months (with a release date of May 1st, 2015). Therefore, Janet would need to be introduced way earlier than that; perhaps even on Joss Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D." series. That way, there would be plenty of time for audiences to get to know her as the Wasp before fighting alongside big names such as Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor.
