Marc Webb knew he had found his Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy from the moment he tested Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone together. Sparks apparently flew from the second he first auditioned the couple, who have been dating ever since they starred in "The Amazing Spider-Man."
"When we tested them, there was fireworks. She could take on Andrew's improvisation and witticisms and one-up them. I mean, it was amazing to see them go back and forth," Webb recalled in a new behind-the-scenes video, courtesy of ET. "It was really fun to watch them and, again, it became an obvious combination because that's what people are there for."
To hear Garfield tell it, having the chance to work with Stone changed his life forever. We were obsessed enough with them as a couple as it was, but hearing him gush about his real-life girlfriend for any longer than he does here could lead to definite swooning.
"She came in, and she was like a shot of espresso. She was like being bathed in sunlight," he said. "She's incredibly energetic and enthusiastic and she had this sense of play and fun, which was incredibly exciting."
For her part, Stone is a bit more level headed about the whole thing, saying that their onscreen chemistry is just part of the acting process.
"Between Andrew and I, I think Marc's biggest goal has been working out that relationship and making sure it all feels authentic," she said. "He sort of brings it all back down to Earth even though we're operating in a superhero universe."
"The Amazing Spider-Man" hits DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 9.
