Ming-Na is joining the Marvel Universe as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Melinda May in Joss Whedon's upcoming TV pilot. If the character doesn't sound familiar to you, that's because she's an all-new creation for the Whedon-penned show — and based on the actress' recent comments, we can expect more of Whedon's originality than comic book faithfulness when "S.H.I.E.L.D." hits the air.
"I don't think he's going to base it as much on the comics," the actress said in an interview with AMC Theaters. "This is going to be sort of like his own thing with Stan Lee. I'd rather take it fresh from his point of view."
But just because Ming-Na won't be studying Marvel history too closely doesn't mean she isn't getting in sync with Whedon projects past and present.
"Completely. I'm in the Whedonverse all the way," she said of her current research process. "I'm going to watch every single thing that he's ever done. I was a huge fan anyway so I'm rewatching a lot. 'Firefly' I'm rewatching, and 'Avengers' I saw again. It's amazing."
Describing the audition process as "intense" but "welcoming," Ming-Na concluded that at the end of the day, the word "excited" doesn't even cover her current feelings towards "S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Ecstatic, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious — yeah, that might cover it," she said.
