Tom Cruise does not look very happy in the new still from Joseph Kosinski's "Oblivion." In the still, he's seen running from a helicopter and away from... something. Is it the alien race known as the Scavs? A human enemy? Something more terrifying? Your guess is as good as ours.
Though this photo and previous images and posters have offered vague impressions of "Oblivion's" premise, what's stuck out to us most is Kosinski's visual style. Regardless of your thoughts on "Tron: Legacy" as a film, it's hard to deny that the effects were phenomenal and a high point of the movie. The same seems to be the case in "Oblivion," though Kosinski has traded in "Tron's" blue and black palate for a lighter, grayer one.
When MTV News caught up with Kosinski recently, he dished on the visual style of the movie.
"Visually, I always knew exactly what I wanted the film to look like. 'Alien' is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I feel like after 'Alien,' science fiction kind of went into the dark for a long time," he said. "I liked the idea of bringing science fiction out into the daylight again. So it is a daytime science fiction film where the world is kind of divided into two zones: the world above the clouds and the world below the clouds. ... That juxtaposition to me in concept lends itself into a visual juxtaposition as well, where you're gonna see technology set against a landscape that I feel is something we haven't really seen before."
"Oblivion" also stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Zoe Bell. It's due out in IMAX on April 12 and regular theaters on April 19.
