WWE star Dave Bautista has landed a role in Marvel's upcoming film, "Guardians of the Galaxy," becoming the second actor cast after Chris Pratt, who will play Star-Lord. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and gave us a description of the character, perhaps letting us know just how Drax will fit into the James Gunn film.
"Drax is a human resurrected as a green warrior for the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the final-scene tease of Avengers). His powers include flight, super-strength and energy blasts."
This description is a bit dated, since it references a lot of the powers Drax lost just before joining up with his fellow Guardians during the 2006 Marvel Comics event "Annihilation." When the character first debuted in 1973's "Iron Man" #55, he could fly and shoot energy blasts with the best of them. Thirty years later, a death and rebirth stripped him of his more fantastical powers and left him reliant on his brute physical abilities, augmented with a pair of knives.
This brawling version of Drax fits Dave Bautista perfectly. Bautista looks able to go toe-to-toe with Earth's mightiest, no powers or CGI necessary. A physical performer is exactly what Drax the Destroyer needs, since he's a character more likely to talk with his fists. During his eight years with the WWE, Bautista became a six-time world champion, winning the World Heavyweight Championship four times, and the WWE Championship two times.
The film comes at a great time for Bautista, who's acting career is just starting to take off. He had a role in last year's "The Man With the Iron Fists" and will star in the upcoming Vin Diesel franchise film, "Riddick."
"Guardians of the Galaxy" is scheduled for release on August 1st, 2014.
