"Iron Man 3" has already dominated the box office overseas, shattering records and raking in over $307 million before even opening in the United States. The film's already claimed opening day records in Taiwan, the Philippines, and China.
But where will "Iron Man 3" land when the dust clears on Monday morning? Box Office Mojo's Ray Subers thinks that the threequel is on track for a $177 million opening weekend domestically, which would top "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" and make it the second-highest opening ever. But what's keeping Tony Stark from taking the top spot?
That would be his old buddies, "The Avengers." Remember them? Almost exactly a year ago, "Marvel's the Avengers" opened with a still-unbelievable $207.4 million opening weekend that seems impossible to overtake. But "Iron Man 3" hasn't given up without a fight. Any human being who has left their home or turned on a television since the Super Bowl has been bombarded with larger-than-life images of Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Awareness for this film is staggering, as is anticipation.
It doesn't hurt that other studios have steered clear of "Iron Man 3's" opening. The only challenger to its throne is "Star Trek Into Darkness," which doesn't open for another two weeks. Until then, all the money belongs to "Iron Man 3." It's just a question of how much money.
And when it comes to tackling the insane amount of dollars earned by "Marvel's the Avengers" on its opening weekend, what film could possibly come close? I think it's safe to say that the film will keep its record for a few more years, with "The Avengers 2" or "Star Wars: Episode VII" the only real competition in sight.
