It looks like it might be a while before Agent Coulson hits the big screen again. His demise in "Marvel's the Avengers" seemingly put an end to his adventures, but now his as-yet-unexplained resurrection this fall in ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has fans wondering if the beloved agent will assemble alongside the Avengers. Just... don't hold you breath.
The Associated Press caught up with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" writer and director Joss Whedon and asked him the question on every fan's mind: Will Coulson return in the sequel? The answer at this moment, sadly, is no.
"He could," said Whedon, offering a glimmer of hope before dashing it all. "Right now it's not something I'm pursuing because I have so much going on in 'Avengers 2.' Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. That's better than the other thing."
Sure, that makes sense. Coulson's death was a big deal, and his return would be a big deal for the Avengers. It would call into question Fury's motives - especially if his deceptive trading card maneuver is revealed - and would require a lot of attention just to get the plot back on track. There's Ultron to deal with. No time for heartfelt reunions.
But then again, Whedon does say he could return, it's just not looking likely right now. And there's still a lot of time before the movie starts filming. Something could happen between now and then, and it's not like these types of movies are always up front and honest about what characters are and are not in the film.
