Few characters have taken on a life of their own quite in the same way that Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson has—and even fewer have received as meaningful send-offs as the one the everyman received during last summer's "Marvel's the Avengers." But that wasn't the end of Coulson's story—even if Clark Gregg believed it to be for a few months!
The character will return to the land of the living this fall in ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," where Gregg will team-up with a number of new agents—including those played by Ming-Na Wen and Brett Dalton. MTV News' Josh Horowitz got to interview all three actors during San Diego Comic-Con, where Gregg got to go into detail about how he said goodbye to his character.
"They called me a month before they gave me the script to 'The Avengers' and they said, 'You know, Joss wasn't kidding; you have a major part in this,'" says Gregg. "They said, 'Yeah, what happens to you is what brings the Avengers together.' And I was like, 'say what?'" Gregg's story goes into the ups and downs of finding out he was dying, dealing with it that day on set ("Any rewrite pages from the governor?"), to ultimately finding out that Coulson will ride again... in a hot car named Lola, to boot.
