David Conrad just got some company down in the S.H.I.E.L.D. science office—English actor Ian Hart. The "Bates Motel" and "Luck" actor will join "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." in a recurring role as another science officer, thus making us suspect that there's gonna be a lot of crazy stuff on this show that will necessitate an ever-expanding team of scientists to solve.
Of course some fans might recognize Hart from his role in 2001's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" as Professor Quirinus Quirrell. It's ironic, though, that the actor who previously played a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher would find himself in the science division—especially considering the universe-building rule that was revealed in Entertainment Weekly's casting announcement.
Apparently, the writing staff's unwritten rule (which has now been written all over the internet, I'm sure) that all super-powers introduced on the show must be explained by science—not magic or supernatural forces. Keeping this in mind will help us here at Splash Page in our continuing endeavors to speculate and hypothesize about which Marvel Universe characters will be showing up on the show. On that note, MTV Geek even has a hunch about who J. August Richards is playing, too.
We don't, however, have any idea who Hart could be playing. We exhausted the list of S.H.I.E.L.D. science officers when David Conrad was cast as one, and honestly, most of them don't even stand out. Since every one of the show's principle cast members is an original character, it'd make sense for Hart and Conrad to be original characters too.
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." debuts on ABC on September 24th.
