That sound you're hearing is the sound of pretty much every single Marvel Comics fan crossing their fingers, because we now have reason to believe that Marvel Studios has approached Katee Sackhoff to appear as Captain Marvel.
Okay, that is a bit of a leap, but Katee Sackhoff playing Carol Danvers is about as perfect a casting as Patrick Stewart as Professor X, so we're gonna talk about anything that gets this closer to being a reality. In truth, Comic Book Movie is reporting that Sackhoff appeared on the Schmoes Know Podcast and mentioned that "there's been some stuff going on" between herself and Disney, mostly "a lot of checking of availability for the first quarter of next year."
So get your speculation-engines fired up!
This briefest of brief updates is of course colored by the very recent reveal that Marvel Studios definitely has Captain Marvel on the brain. Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito recently opened up about this possibility in an interview with Superhero Hype.
"There's obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female leader superhero," said D'Esposito. "We have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there's an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?"
If Sackhoff says that there have been discussions with Disney regarding her availability for the beginning of 2014, is it possible that Carol Danvers will be included in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," which starts filming early next year? Old rumors about the sequel pegged Danvers for inclusion. This rumor hasn't been followed up on, what with all the other new Avengers (Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver). But there's no reason why Carol couldn't appear in "Age of Ultron" in a role similar to what Maria Hill played in "Marvel's the Avengers"; she doesn't need a full-fledged role just yet if the team is already over-crowded, especially if the plan is to immediately spin her out into her own solo film. As long as the seed for a solo Captain Marvel film gets planted...
If you've read this far and don't already know why Sackhoff would be perfect for Captain Marvel, then let me fill you in. Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel, a human being gifted with the advanced powers of the Kree race of aliens (aliens that will factor into "Guardians of the Galaxy," by the way). She can fly, she has super strength, she can shoot energy blasts—she can basically do everything that Iron Man does, except she doesn't need a pesky suit to do it. Her power is all within her. Carol's a skilled pilot in the air force, a natural born leader, stubborn as all get out, and incredibly passionate with an independent streak—while still maintaining some of the strongest friendships in the Marvel Universe.
If you've seen Sackhoff in "Battlestar Galactica," then you know that this is a role she can pull off well. And when it comes to sharing the screen with a cast of incredibly charismatic actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth, Katee Sackhoff can easily go toe-to-toe with them on every level. She's an immensely likable and captivating actress, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be all the better for her inclusion.
So while this is nowhere near concrete evidence, we hope that this is an article we'll be linking to quite a bit in the coming months as more news of this kind happens. Fingers. Crossed.
